Descriptions of the Harmonium 
 
Body

The body is the box that houses the various parts of the harmonium.
 Bellows
The bellows are the pumps which force the air through the instrument. There are really two sets of bellows, one internal and one external. The external bellows are pumped by hand; these are familiar to the average player. The external bellows then forces the air into the internal bellows. The internal bellows act as a reservoir for the air. These bellows lay deep inside the instrument and are visible only by disassembling the instrument. The internal bellows push against a spring; it is this spring which forces the air over the reeds.

Keys
The keys are the small wooden controls that the performer fingers to play the music. There are black keys and white keys. Although the keyboard is reminiscent of the keyboards found on pianos and other Western instruments.

 Cover
The cover is a small piece of wood, sometimes with cloth or glass, which covers the workings of the harmonium. It serves two functions. The most important is to protect the workings against damage. It also changes the sound by muting the higher frequencies while allowing the lower frequencies to pass. Sometimes the cover has a sliding panel which makes this muting action adjustable.

 
Handles
The handles allow for easy transport of the harmonium. In a box type, there are two handles on the sides. In a suitcase style, there is only a single handle.
Reeds (not shown)
The reeds a series of brass reeds set into a heavier brass base. Each base is roughly 1/4 inch by 2 inches. There must be a minimum of one reed per key while two or three are the most common. These small brass reeds vibrate whenever air passes over them.
Coupler (not shown)
A coupler is a mechanical arrangement whereby another key is played along with the one being fingered. Normally it is the key located an octave below the selected key. This arrangement produces a much richer sound than an uncoupled keyboard. This coupling may be enabled or disabled by the user.
Reed Board (not shown)
The reed board is a flat piece of wood with a series of long holes cut in them. There are a series of brass reeds covering these holes. These reeds are arranged in banks. If there are two banks of reeds, it is said to be a double-reed harmonium.. If there are three banks of reeds, it is said to be a triple-reed harmonium.The triple-reed harmonium is generally considered to be superior to the double-reed variety.

The harmonium is created by master musician who has the knowlege of the music and the instrument.

This 1940’s M. Hohner Mod. No. 265 Double-Bass Harmonica (Chromatische Harmonika)  is in extraordinarily fine condition with the exception of some minor tarnishing to the plating near the mouthing area, which is normal for an instrument of this calibre that has been used professionally over several decades.
I found it at The Rose Bowl Swap meet in L.A. and knew right away when I saw the name “BORRAH” in the inscription that there was something special about this harmonica.  I had grown up watching “Borrah Minevitch and The Harmonica Rascals” on early TV.  These minstral hooligans, all great musicians, were hilarious with their vaudeville-inspired shtick and hijinx, especially the little guy in the cowboy hat and white sheepskin chaps, the adorable and irrascible Johnny Puleo.
After a week of research and contact with some members the S.P.A.H. (Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica), I figured out the inscription. “BILL” had to be Bill Walden, who played Double Bass in the band at that time and happened to turn 19 on August 5th, 1944.  He was already playing the bass harmonica at 14, performing in a duet under the name “The Newald Brothers”, with his partner Bob Neubauer, and went on to become one of the longest and most-beloved members of The Rascals.  The vendor at The Rose Bowl had not done her homework and was obviously too young to remember any of the great harmonica bands of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.  
The inscribed names were obviously “JOHNNY” Puleo, “JERRY” Murad, “PETE” Pedersen, “DOM” Quagenti, “DICK” Hayman and “BORRAH” Minevitch, himself.  Two other players who were with the group at that time are missing (Dick Rider and Vic Pace).  It’s interesting to note that over the three decades of their highest popularity, “Borrah Minevitch and The Harmonica Rascals” employed at least 25 other top harmonica players who appeared with band, on and off, during that era.
A member of the Society told me that, to his knowledge, the harmonica virtuosi of the time did not usually gift each other with these expensive orchestral-quality harmonicas, like the large Double-Bass and the gigantic Chord Harmonica.  But it is plausible that if Bill Walden’s own No. 265 had been lost or damaged somehow, his birthday would have been the perfect opportunity for the band to gift him with one.  I’m hoping that if, perhaps, there are any surviving members still around, they will contact me with more information.
Regardless, this is an absolutely beautiful Double-Bass with a rather unique and somewhat “mysterious” history.  I welcome and will respond to questions and, hopefully, some further information as to the provenance of the harmonica.  Enjoy the auction!
