<p>PRODUCT DESCRIPTION</p>
<p>MAX CLR-HP A/B is a two-part epoxy based system specially formulated as High Performance version of the MAX CLR resin system.It offers higher mechanical performance while maintaining crystal clarity, gloss and other aesthetic qualities. MAX CLR-HP provides excellent performance at wider service temperature range, especially its retention of its mechanical hardness at elevated temperatures as well its durability when exposed to below freezing temperatures. Its none blushing performance, high gloss finish, excellent transparent clarity, color stability and ease of use make MAX CLR-HP an excellent choice as an impregnating resin for composite fabrics, protective coatings, casting resin and general fabricating applications. </p>
<p>MAX CLR-HP also offers high chemical resistance, structural adhesion and overall durability suitable for many protective coatings applications.</p>
<p>MAX CLR-HP A/B performs well at room temperature use and can withstand cyclic exposure to temperatures form -40°C to 112°C with minimal loss of mechanical performance.<br />
MAX CLR-HP A/B can be as as an adhesive for bonding at variety of substrates such as composite materials, concrete and ceramic products, plastics, wood, glass, steel, aluminum and most soft metals. </p>
<p>Upon Cure, MAX CLR-HP A/B resists extreme and repeated thermal shocks making it well suited for bonding substrates with dissimilar expansion coefficients.<br />
MAX CLR-HP A/B is 100% solids and does not contain Ozone Depleting Chemicals (ODC), non-reactive plasticizers or solvent fillers.</p>
<p>A POST CURE AT 120°F TO 150°F FOR 2 HOURS AFTER IT HAS CURED TO THE TOUCH WILL INSURE FULL CURE.<br />
USE AN INFRARED HEAT LAMP FOR LARGER PARTS.</p>
<p>COLD TEMPERATURE NOTICE<br />
DURING THE COLDER SEASONS THE RESIN AND CURING AGENT SHOULD BE WARMED TO AT LEAST 75°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C) PRIOR TO USE TO REDUCE ITS VICOSITY,<br />
REDUCE AIR BUBBLE ENTRAPMENT, MAINTAIN ITS WORKING TIME AND INSURE PROPER CURE. IN SOME CASES THE RESIN OR PART A MAY APPEAR TO BE<br />
CLOUDY OR SOLIDIFIED, WHICH IS AN INDICATION OF RESIN CRYSTALLIZATION.</p>
<p>HEAT PROCESSED&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; PARTIALLY CRYSTALIZED CRYSTALLIZED<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; DO NOT USE UNLESS PROCESSED</p>
<p>THE COLD TEMPERATURE EXPOSURE CAN OCCUR DURING TRANSPORT OR DELIVERY OF THE KIT WERE THE PACKAGE CAN BE EXPOSED TO TEMPERATURES BELOW 50°F AND INITIATE THE RESIN TO CRYSTALIZE OR DEVELOP SEED CRYSTALS. THE CONTAINER CAN WITHSAND 212°F (BOILING POINT OF WATER); THE RESIN SHOULD REVERT BACK INTO A LIQUID IN LESS THAN 20 MINUTES.<br />
ALLOW THE RESIN TO COOL BELOW 80°F BEFORE ADDING THE CURING AGENT.</p>
<p>A POLYMER RESIN&#8217;S PHYSICAL PROPERTY SUCH AS ITS VISCOSITY AND CURE RATE ARE HIGHLY AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t how much resin to use to go with the fiberglass? </p>
<p>A good rule of thumb is to maintain a minimum of 30 to 35% resin content by weight, this is the optimum ratio used in high performance prepreg (or pre-impregnated fabrics) typically used in aerospace and high performance structural application.</p>
<p>For general hand lay-ups, calculate using 60% fabric weight to 40% resin weight as a safe factor.<br />
This will insure that the fabricated laminate will be below 40% resin content depending on the waste factor accrued during fabrication.</p>
<p>Place the entire precut fiberglass to be used on a scale to determine the weight ratio between the resin and fabric composition. </p>

<p>Impact testing is one of the most revealing test methods that demonstrate a material&#8217;s ability to resist and withstand a high-rate of pressure loading, its behavior during and after the impact can define its maximum mechanical property and conditional limits upon its destruction.</p>
<p>Why is Impact Testing Important?<br />
The impact resistance of an object provides the ultimate measure of its resistance to its definitive destruction. Governed by the many laws and dynamics of physics, a skilled chemist or materials engineer can determine the design equilibrium and ultimate performance by careful analysis of the material’s disassociation and the manner of its destruction.<br />
With this knowledge, other aspects of mechanical performance can be accurately derived and through skilful engineering one can determine:</p>
<p>The impact energies the part can be expected to see in its lifetime,<br />
The type of impact that will deliver that energy, and then<br />
Select a material that will resist such assaults over the projected life span.</p>

<p>PROPER MIXING OF EPOXY RESINS</p>
<p>DURING COLDER SEASON, THE EPOXY RESIN AND CURING AGENT WILL BE THICKER OR HIGHER IN VISCOSITY. TEMPER BOTH COMPONENTS TO AT LEAST 23°C TO 25°C BEFORE MIXING. A GOOD METHOD IS TO PLACE THE BOTTLES IN A WARM ROOM FOR 24 HOURS OR PLACE BOTH COMPONENTS IN A PLASTIC BAG AND SEAL TIGHTLY AND THEN PLACE IN HOT WATER BATH FOR ABOUT 2 TO 4 HOURS. REMOVE FORM THE WATER BATH AND INSURE THAT THE COMPONENTS ARE BELOW 80°F BEFORE MIXING TOGETHER. THIS WILL LOWER THE VISCOSITY TO THE CONSISTENCY AS SHOWN ON THE VIDEO DEMONSTRATION.<br />

<p>ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION OF REMOVING SURFACE AIR BUBBLES USING THE ACETONE SPRAY TECHNIQUE</p>
<p>IMPROVING SURFACE GLOSS, LUSTER AND OVERALL SURFACE DURABILITY</p>

THE RESIN USED WAS AN EXPERIMENTAL FORMULATION.<br />
THE FOLLOWING VIDOE DEMONSTRATES HOW THERMO-SET RESINS CAN REACT WHEN MIXED IN LARGE MASS AND ALLOWED TO REACT IN A CONFINED CONTAINER. </p>
<p>To Use MAX CLR-HP A/B As A Coating </p>
<p>Prepare the surface to be coated or sealed by degreasing and removing any surface contaminants.<br />
If coating a wood substrate as a base, preseal the wood with MAX CLR HP thinned down with 10% to 20% acetone or MEK by volume. This will create a low viscosity penetrating sealant to lock in any grain rasing. Allow to cure overnight. </p>
<p>Upon cure, lightly sand the surface to remove any raised wood grain, sand off just enough to remove any gloss and then clean with a tack rag.<br />
Repeat if necessary until a smooth surface is achieved. If imbedding pictures or other items unto the tabletop, plaques or a decoupage projects, secure the items using the MAX CLR-HP as an adhesive and allow to set-up before coating.<br />
Pour the mixed MAX CLR HP into another container and mix for another minute (this insures that no tacky spots caused by unmixed material will be applied) and pour or brush or foam roller (use foam roller for a lint free application) coat apply unto the substrate to be sealed.</p>
<p>Allow the coating to flow out evenly and protect the surface from airborne dust and debris until it has set-up. If a thicker coating is desired, allow to set-up for at least 6 hours before applying subsequent coats.To remove stubborn surface bubbles, pass a flame from a propane torch over the surface very, very quickly and the air bubbles will pop. Allow the completed coating to cure for at least 24 hours before handling.<br />
Optional step for a super high gloss finish<br />
Upon full cure of the coating, lightly wet sand the surface using a 1800 grit then an a 2000 grit or finer polishing or rubbing compound and apply durable car polish. </p>
<p>To Use MAX CLR-HP A/B As A Casting Resin</p>
<p>Clean the mold and apply a good quality release agent such as wax mold release or PVA mold release.<br />
Slowly pour the mixed MAX CLR HP into the on corner of mold cavity and allow the resin to fill the cavity allowing the entrapped air bubbles to rise to the surface.<br />
Remove any surface air bubbles using the torch technique described above.<br />
Allow to cure at room temperature for 24 to 36 hours.</p>
<p>To use MAX CLR-HP A/B As An Electrical Potting Compound </p>
<p>Place the circuit board in the casing or cavity and secure all wiring leads to its desired position.<br />
Pour the mixed MAX CLR-HP into one corner of the cavity and fill to the desired level. By pouring or filling the resin from corner of the electronic casing any air voids is pushed away and reduce the possibility of &#8220;high-pots&#8221; that is caused by voids in the potting compound.<br />
Cure at room temperature for at least 24 hours before putting in service.</p>

Mix and pour about 200 grams of Part A resin to 100 grams Curing agent per stage casting until the desired thickness is achieved. Allow 90 minutes in between staged casting or until the prior pour has cooled before pouring the next volume. No sanding is needed in between cast and allow to cure for at least 36 hours before demolding.</p>

<p>Satin Weave Style<br />
This style fabric is one of the easiest fabrics to use and it is ideal for laying up cowls, fuselages, ducts and other contoured surfaces with minimal distortions. The fabric is more pliable and can comply with complex contours and spherical shapes. Because of the finer weave it, several layers of the satin weave fabric is typically used as the surface ply or the fascia in conjunction with heavier and courser weaves.<br />
This technique helps reduce fabric weave print through and requires less gel coat and creates a smoother surface.</p>
<p>Mock LenoThe mock leno weave is used where relatively low numbers of yarns are involved. The leno weave locks the yarns in place by crossing two or more warp threads over each other and interlacing with one or more filling threads.</p>
<p>Four Harness Satin (Crowfoot)The four harness satin weave is more pliable than the plain weave and is easier to conform to curved surfaces typical in reinforced plastics. In this weave pattern there is a three by one interfacing where a filling yarn floats over three warp yarns and under one.</p>

<p>Plain Weave<br />
Use this fiberglass cloth when high strength parts are desired. It is ideal for construction, composites reinforcement, mold making, aircraft and auto parts tooling, marine and other composite lightweight applications.</p>
<p>Unidirectional<br />
A unidirectional fabric is constructed were the all the roving or fabric strand is oriented in one direction. This provides high strength in a known directional angle. The Design of must be carefully considered and insure that the resistive force is well identified and incorporated in the luminant’s design. </p>
<p>Unidirectional laminate offers outstanding strength-to-weight ratio, Fiber to resin ratio control and stability (minimized probability of resin-rich and/or resin-dry areas), exceptionally directional high impact resistance. The integrity is maintained through very fine, adhesive coated fill yarns that are bonded to but not interwoven.</p>
<p>Equally as important in choosing a fabric weave style is the fabric finishing</p>
<p>Fabric finishing is another important aspect that must be considered when choosing any type of composite fabric.<br />
The finishing of the fabric will dictate the compatibility (WET-OUT) of the epoxy resin with the fabric and how well these two factors will form a homogenous substrate.</p>
<p>Chrome Finishes (Volan A) F-16 &amp; F-3<br />
Heat cleaned fabric is saturated in a methacrylate chromic chloride solution, cured, and washed to remove any soluble salts.<br />
Both F-16 and F-3 are Volan type finishes with F-3 being a highest chrome content version.<br />
Used with polyesters, phenolic, and epoxies, F-16 and F-3 fabrics yields a light green laminate</p>

<p>Step Two: Choose the best epoxy resin system for the job</p>
<p>The principal role of the resin is to bind the fabric into a homogenous rigid substrate<br />
called a composite laminate or FRP- FIBER REINFORCED PLASTIC.</p>
<p>The epoxy resin used in fabricating a laminate will dictate how the<br />
FRP will perform when load or pressure is implied on the part.<br />
To choose the proper resin system consider the following factors<br />
that is crucial to a laminate&#8217;s performance.</p>

<p>Step Three: Proper Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber, Kevlar And Composite Fabric Lay-Up Technique</p>

Mix the resin only when all needed materials and implements needed are ready and within reach<br />
Mix the proper amount of resin needed and be accurate proportioning the resin and curing agent.<br />
Adding more curing agent than the recommended mix ratio will not promote a faster cure.<br />
Over saturation or starving the fiberglass or any composite lay-up will yield poor mechanical performance.<br />
Don&#8217;t how much resin to use to go with the fiberglass?<br />
A good rule of thumb is to maintain a minimum of 30 to 35% resin content by weight, this is the optimum ratio used in high performance prepreg (or pre-impregnated fabrics) typically used in aerospace and high performance structural application.<br />
For general hand lay-ups, use 60% fabric weight to 40% resin weight as a safe factor.<br />
Place the entire precut fiberglass to be used on a scale and determine the weight. </p>
<p>Typical fabric weights regardless of weave pattern<br />
1 yard of 8 OSY fabric at 38 inches wide weighs 224 grams<br />
1 yard of 10 OSY fabric at 38 inches wide weighs 280 grams</p>
<p>Ounces per square yard or OSY is also know as aerial weight which is the most common unit of measurement for composite fabrics.</p>
<p>If a scale is available, measuring by weight will insure better composite<br />
fabrication and repeatability, rather than using OSY data.</p>
<p>To determine how much resin is needed to adequately impregnate the fiberglass, use the following equation:</p>
<p>(Total Weight of Fabric divided by 60%) X(40%)= weight of mixed resin needed<br />
fw = fabric weight<br />
rc = target resin content<br />
rn= resin needed</p>
<p>(fw/60%(.40%)= rn</p>
<p>(224 grams of dry fiberglass / 60%) X 40% = 149.3 grams of resin needed </p>
<p>So for every square yard of 8 ounce fabric, you will need 4.50 fluid ounces of mixed resin.</p>
<p>Common Factors Of 100% Solids (Zero volatiles and unfilled epoxy resin)<br />
1 gallon of resin = 4239 grams (1.12 g/cc)<br />
1 gallon = 128 fluid ounces<br />
1 fluid ounce of resin = 33.17 grams</p>
<p>Apply the mixed resin unto the surface and then lay the fabric and allow the resin to saturate the fabric.<br />
NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND<br />
This is one of the most common processing error that yields sub-standard laminates.<br />
By laying the fiberglass unto a film of resin, less air bubbles are entrapped during the wetting-out stage. </p>
<p>Air is pushed up and outwards instead of forcing the resin through the fabric which will entrap air bubbles. This technique will displace air unhindered and uniformly disperse through out the fiberglass with minimal mechanical agitation or spreading.</p>
<p>Given enough time and the proper selection of the fabric&#8217;s finishing surface treatment, most dry fabric will equalize the distribution of the applied resin naturally thus creating less air bubbles to be entrapped within the laminant. </p>
<p>It is then very important that the proper viscosity, working time and the fabric density and weave style must be determined to yield the best result.<br />
Equally important are fabricating techniques that can be employed to reduce air entrapment within the laminant matrix. Depending on the size of the part, processes such as high pressure pressing, vacuum bagging or autoclaving are superior methods over hand lay-ups. </p>
<p>Air voids or porosity within the laminate is typically where failure propagates when load is applied.<br />

Given enough time and the proper selection of the fabric&#8217;s surface treatment (fabric to resin compatibility), a dry fabric will seek a state equilibrium and distribute the applied resin and naturally release air bubbles entrapped within the laminant.<br />
It is then very important that the proper viscosity, working time and surface treatment of the fabric must considered. </p>
<p>Step Four: Proper Curing<br />
Room Temperature Cured Epoxy Resins</p>
<p>Proper and thorough mixing of the epoxy resin and curing agent is to achieve the optimum mechanical property of any epoxy resin. Please view our &#8220;Epoxy Mixing Technique&#8221; video presentation above for more information. Adding more curing agent than the recomended mix ratio will not promote a faster cure. Allow to cure for 24 hours before handling. Optimum cured properties can take up to 7 days depending on the ambient cure condition. The ideal cure condtion of most room temperature epoxy resin is 22 to 27 degrees Celcius at 20% relative humidity. Higher ambient curing temperatures will promote faster polymerization. </p>
<p>AMINE BLUSH<br />
Blush (amine blush) is a waxy layer that forms as most epoxies cure. When the epoxy is cured in extreme humidity, it will be seen as a white and waxy layer, that must be removed by physical sanding of the surface followed aby an acetone wipe. Amine blush is due to moisture as well as the amount of carbon dioxide present during the curing process. The affinity of an amine (curing agent) to moisture and carbon dioxide creates carbonate compounds.Typically a short heat post cure will further improve the mechanical performance of most epoxy resins. In general room temperature cured epoxy resin have a maximum operating temperature of 250F. Some darkening or yellowing of the epoxy resin may occur when heat cured.</p>
<p>Clean up excess resin run off before it has a chance to set-up using a rag dampen with acetone or MEK. </p>
<p>&nbsp;<br />
Improving mechanical performance via post heat cure</p>
<p>A short heat post cure will further improve the mechanical performance of most epoxy resins. In general room temperature cured epoxy resin has a maximum operating temperature of 250°F and 160°F under stress or load. Some darkening or yellowing of the epoxy resin may occur when over exposed to high temperature (&gt;250 F).</p>

DESCRIPTION<br />
MAX BOND LV A/B is a two-part epoxy/polyamide based adhesive system especially formulated to provide structural bond strength to a variety of substrates. It is a low viscosity version of MAX BOND A/B providing improved ease of use and faster fabric wetting. It is well suite for use in low temperature or cold weather environments.<br />
MAX BOND LV A/B provides a moderate pot life, exceptional mechanical properties, and easy application for wet and dry fiberglass, carbon fabric lay-ups. Unlike polyester resins typically used in marine fabrication, which tends to get waterlogged, MAX BOND LV A/B demonstrates negligible loss of mechanical properties due to continuous water exposure. </p>
<p>Epoxy/Polyamide based resins are one of the best systems to use for applications that will be subject to water immersion and marine environments. It provides excellent resistance to saltwater, acidic and caustic exposure and retains its physical properties even after prolonged water immersion. MAX BOND LV A/B is 100 % reactive solids and does not contain Ozone Depleting Chemicals (ODC). </p>
<p>MAX BOND LV A/B will cure even in humid and low temperature conditions. It is generally room temperature cured but can be snap cured at elevated temperatures for a short period of time.<br />
MAX BOND LV A/B demonstrates structural bond strengths to a variety of substrates commonly used in composites industry such as, steel, aluminum and soft metals, fiberglass, concrete and ceramic and most plastics. Dispense equal parts of Part A and Part B and mix thoroughly until a homogenous consistency is achieved. The mixture will turn translucent milky amber but will clarify when applied in a thin film during curing. Transfer the mixed resin into another clean container and mix for another minute and use. For mix metering application, ensure that an equal flow rate of Part A and Part B is achieved. A 24 element static mixer provides excellent mix results. Attach the static mixer and dispense and discard approximately 1-ounce material before using the material.Dispense the material in on corner of the component casing and allow the material to completely flow through out. This technique will reduce voids and air entrapment.</p>

Each batch of resin and curing agent is tested for its basic physical property and must comply with standards established by our product engineering group. All test procedures are governed by ASTM or American Standards Test Methods.<br />

<p>Epoxy based polymers are one of the most versatile thermoset resins that can be modified into a multitude of applications and fit very specific task as demanded by the application. It offers ease of use and generally safer to handle over other types of thermoset resins which makes it the choice material for many high performance composites. New ideas demand new technology in material science and the skill to compose its constituent into a synergistic composite.<br />
What is impact testing?<br />
Impact testing is one of the most revealing test methods that demonstrate a material&#8217;s ability to resist and withstand a high-rate of pressure loading, its behavior during and after the impact can define its maximum mechanical property and conditional limits upon its destruction.<br />
Why is Impact Testing Important?<br />
The impact resistance of an object provides the ultimate measure of its resistance to its definitive destruction. Governed by the many laws and dynamics of physics, a skilled chemist or materials engineer can determine the design equilibrium and ultimate performance by careful analysis of the material’s disassociation and the manner of its destruction.<br />
With this knowledge, other aspects of mechanical performance can be accurately derived and through skilful engineering one can determine the impact energies the part can withstand and design the construction that will resist such assaults over the projected life span.</p>
<p>APPLICATION AND USAGE<br />
MAX BOND LV A/B is self-leveling and easily poured into place and is well suited for mixed meter-dispensing equipment or mix and pour techniques. Large mixes of up to 300 grams are possible without generating excessive exothermic temperatures.The working time is approximately 90 minutes for a 100-gram total mass and less if mixed in large volumes.<br />
For Bonding Applications<br />
To insure a strong bond, items or substrates to be bonded must be clean and free from contaminants such dust, grease, oils and other foreign materials. Please refer to our Surface Preparation Bulletin for suggested surface cleaning method And Proper Bonding Techniques. Apply via brush or roller coat properly mixed resin on both substrates and clamp or apply adequate pressure so that a thin bond line is achieved, approximately .003 to .007 inch minimum bond line thickness. Allow to cure overnight.<br />
For Encapsulating Electronic Parts<br />
Premix the Part A and Part B into a container and then pour the mixed component into another clean container and mix for another minute. This will insure a thoroughly mixed resin is achieved. Pre arrange the wire leads to the desired position and secure. Pour the mixed MAX BOND into the component housing to be encapsulated insuring complete and level coverage. Pour or dispense only from one corner of the component casing and allow the material to completely flow and fill through out the casing. This technique will reduce voids and air entrapment.<br />
For Use as a Concrete or Wood Penetrating or as a Water Sealant<br />
Mix equal parts of Part A and Part B in a clean container and thin with acetone or MEK (about 90 parts mixed resin to 10 parts solvent). Apply on cleaned and dried wood or concrete in thin coats using a roller-coater or bristle brush. Work in small areas and with good ventilation. Acetone or MEK is highly flammable solvent. Remove all ignition sources before application.<br />
Allow to cure for 36 hours.<br />
For Laminating or Reinforcing with Fiber Fabric Materials.<br />
MAX BOND LV A/B works well as a laminating resin for composite fabrics such as canvas, fiberglass, carbon fiber, Aramid fiber and other hybrid and synthetic fabrics. Apply a thin layer of the mixed MAX BOND LV A/B unto the pre-cleaned substrate to be reinforced. Apply a layer of fiberglass and aide the resin to wet-out the fiberglass using a brush and apply subsequent layers of fabric sandwiching a layer of resin until the desire thickness is achieved. Use a rubber squeegee to remove excess resin. Allow curing for 24 hours. If using a vacuum bag technique or a platen press, please review our “Lay-up sequence for bagging operations” bulletin.<br />

The eight-harness satin is similar to the four-harness satin except that one filling yarn floats over seven warp yarns and under one.<br />
This is a very pliable weave and is used for forming over curved surfaces.</p>

The four-harness satin weave is more pliable than the plain weave and is easier to conform to curved surfaces typical in reinforced plastics. In this weave pattern there is a three by one interfacing where a filling yarn floats over three warp yarns and under one.</p>

<p>Step Three: Proper Lay-Up Technique<br />
Pre-lay-up notes<br />
Lay out the fabric and precut to size and set aside<br />
Avoid distorting the weave pattern as much as possible<br />
For fiberglass molding, insure the mold is clean and adequate mold release is used<br />

Mix the resin only when all needed materials and implements needed are ready and within reach<br />
Mix the proper amount of resin needed and be accurate proportioning the resin and curing agent.<br />
Adding more curing agent than the recommended mix ratio will not promote a faster cure.<br />
Over saturation or starving the fiberglass or any composite fabric will yield poor mechanical performance. When mechanical load or pressure is applied on the composite laminate, the physical strength of the fabric should bear the stress and not the resin. If the laminate is over saturated with the resin it will most likely to fracture or shatter instead of rebounding and resist damage.<br />
Don&#8217;t how much resin to use to go with the fiberglass?<br />
A good rule of thumb is to maintain a minimum of 30 to 35% resin content by weight, this is the optimum ratio used in<br />
high performance prepreg (or pre-impregnated fabrics) typically used in aerospace and high performance structural application.</p>
<p>For general hand lay-ups, calculate using 60% fabric weight to 40% resin weight as a safe factor.<br />
This will insure that the fabricated laminate will be below 40% resin content depending on the waste factor accrued during fabrication.<br />
Place the entire precut fiberglass to be used on a digital scale to determine the fabric to resin weight ratio.<br />
Measuring by weight will insure accurate composite fabrication and repeatability, rather than using OSY data.</p>
<p>Typical fabric weights regardless of weave pattern<br />
1 yard of 8 OSY fabric at 38 inches wide weighs 224 grams<br />
1 yard of 10 OSY fabric at 38 inches wide weighs 280 grams</p>
<p>Ounces per square yard or OSY is also know as aerial weight which is the most common unit of measurement for composite fabrics.</p>
<p>To determine how much resin is needed to adequately impregnate the fiberglass, use the following equation:</p>
<p>(Total Weight of Fabric divided by 60%)X( 40%)= weight of mixed resin needed<br />
OR<br />
fw = fabric weight<br />
rc = target resin content<br />
rn= resin needed</p>
<p>MASTER EQUATION<br />

<p>FOR EXAMPLE<br />

Apply the mixed resin unto the surface and then lay the fabric<br />
and allow the resin to saturate through the fabric.<br />
NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND<br />
This is one of the most common processing error that yields sub-standard laminates. </p>
<p>By laying the fiberglass unto a film of resin, less air bubbles are entrapped during the wetting-out stage. </p>
<p>Air is pushed up and outwards instead of forcing the resin through the fabric which will entrap air bubbles.<br />
This technique will displace air unhindered and uniformly disperse through out the fiberglass with minimal mechanical agitation or spreading.</p>

<p>Given enough time and the proper selection of the fabric&#8217;s surface treatment (fabric to resin compatibility), a dry fabric will seek a state equilibrium and distribute the applied resin and naturally release air bubbles entrapped within the laminate.<br />
It is then very important that the proper viscosity, working time and surface treatment of the fabric must<br />
be considered depending on the application of the composite structure. </p>
<p>There are also fabricating techniques that can be employed to yield high performance laminates. Depending on the size of the part, processes such<br />
as high pressure pressing, vacuum bagging and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding are superior methods over hand dry lay-up.<br />
Air voids or porosity within the laminate is typically where failure propagates when load is applied<br />
(fracturing, compression failure, tearing, torque, tensile strength, creep). </p>
<p>Step Four: Proper Curing<br />
Allow the lay-up to cure for a minimum of 24 to 36 hours before handling.<br />
Optimum cured properties can take up to 7 days depending on the ambient cure condition.<br />
The ideal temperature cure condition of most room temperature epoxy resin is 22 to 27 degrees Celsius at 20% relative humidity.<br />
Higher ambient curing temperatures will promote faster polymerization and development of cured mechanical properties.</p>
<p>Improving mechanical performance via post heat cure</p>
<p>A short heat post cure will further improve the mechanical performance of most epoxy resins. Allow the applied resin system to cure at room temperature until for 18 to 24 hours and if possible, expose heat cure it in an oven or other source of radiant heat (220°F to 250°F) for45 minute to an hour. You can also expose it to direct sunlight but place a dark colored cover, such as a tarp or cardboard to protect it from ultraviolet exposure.</p>
<p>In general room temperature cured epoxy resin has a maximum operating temperature of 250°F and 160°F or lower<br />
if it is under stress or load.<br />
A short heat post cure will insure that the mixed epoxy system is fully cured,<br />
especially for room temperature cured system that can take up to 7 days to 100% cure</p>
<p>Some darkening or yellowing of the epoxy resin may occur if over exposed to high temperature (&gt;250 F).</p>
<p>AMINE BLUSH<br />
The affinity of an amine compound (curing agent) to moisture and carbon dioxide creates a carbonate compound and forms what is called amine blush.<br />
Amine blush is a wax-like layer that forms as most epoxies cure. If the epoxy system is cured in extreme humidity (&gt;70%).<br />
It will be seen as a white and waxy layer that must be removed by physical sanding of the surface followed by an acetone wipe. </p>
<p>Although we have formulated the MAX CLR, MAX BOND and MAX GPE product line to be resistant to amine-blush,<br />
it is recommended not to mix any resin systems in high humidity conditions, greater than 70%.<br />
Always make sure that the substrate or material the epoxy resin system is being applied to<br />
is as dry as possible to insure the best cured performance.</p>
<p>OTHER TYPES OF EPOXY RESIN CURE MECHANISM<br />
LATENT CURING SYSTEMS<br />
Latent epoxy resins are systems that are mixed together at room temperature and will begin polymerization but it will not achieve full cure unless it is exposed to a heat cure cycle. In general, these are high performance systems that demonstrate exceptional performance under extreme conditions such as high mechanical performance under heat and cryogenics temperatures, chemical resistance or any environment that epoxy room temperature system perform marginally or poorly.<br />
Upon the mixing of the resin and curing agent polymerization will begin and will only achieve partial cure. Some resins may appear cured or dry to the touch, this state is called &#8216;B-Stage Cure&#8217; ,but upon application of force will either be gummy or brittle almost glass-like and will dissolve in most solvents. The semi-cured resin must be exposed to an elevated temperature for it to continue polymerization and achieve full cure. </p>
<p>HEAT ACTIVATED CURING SYSTEMS<br />
This type of epoxy system will not polymerized unless it is exposed to the activation temperature of the curing agent which can be as low as 200F and as high as 400F. In most instances these epoxy system can be stored at room temperature and remain liquid for up to six months and longer<br />
USE AN INFRARED HEAT LAMP FOR LARGER PARTS IF A PROCESS OVEN IS NOT AVAILABLE</p>
<p>UV CURING SYSTEMS<br />
Similar to &#8220;addition cure&#8221; or catalytic polymerization, Ultraviolet Curing is another method that has gained popular use in the polymer adhesives and coatings application. It offers a unique curing mechanism that converts a liquid polymer into a solid plastic upon exposure to UV radiation. The two common commercially significant method are &#8220;FREE RADICAL INITIATION&#8221; and CATIONIC REACTION. In both reaction polymerization occurs via decomposition of a Photoiniator blended within the resin system; upon exposure to adequate wavelength of Ultraviolet energy the photoinitator degrades and cause a ring opening or cleavage of the photoinitiator molecule and induces rapid polymerization or crosslinking. These species can be either free radical or cationic and occurs almost instantaneous creation of a polymer network.<br />
POSSIBLE HEAT CURING TECHNIQUES<br />
If an oven is not available to provide the needed thermal post cure, exposing the assemble part to direct solar heat<br />
(sun exposure) for a period will provide enough heat cure for the part to be handled.<br />
Other heat curing such as infrared heat lamps can be used if a heat chamber or oven is not available.</p>

This is 50&#8243; wide&nbsp;Kevlar® 29 Style 745 Bullet Resistant Fabric. It is made from DuPont(TM) Aramid Yarn and woven into a fabric on weaving looms. It is used primarily in the Safety &amp; Personal Protection Markets. It can be found and used in a number of personal protection applications including but not limited to: Bullet Resistant Vests, Car Armor, Cockpit Door Armor,&nbsp;Bullet Resistant Panels, Bomb Blankets, Fragmentation protection&nbsp;and many non-ballistic Industrial uses.&nbsp; Kevlar can be sewn into multiple plies and is not needle resistant, it can be glued using a polyurethane based glue, it can also be used with Epoxy resins and&nbsp;vacuum bagged in laminating applications.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />

<p>A Little Physics &#8211; Double Sided Radiant Barrier</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; There are two properties of Radiant Barriers which make them effective at stopping radiant heat.&nbsp; First, because the foil is reflective, it reflects the heat on the hot side.&nbsp; Second, since the foil has a low emissivity value of 0.05, it doesn&#8217;t emit heat on the cold side.&nbsp; In order to benefit from both of these important properties, you must have foil on both sides of the material.&nbsp; A study by a Texas A&amp;M University Professor demonstrated that double sided radiant barrer was nearly twice as effective at blocking heat as the single sided type.&amp;nbsp If you buy radiant barrier from somewhere else, make sure that it is double sided (you should see foil on both sides) for maximum effectiveness.&nbsp; </p>

For these reasons, when using two component polyurethane spray foams we recommend following or participating in a respiratory program.<br />
        All HANDI-FOAM&reg; two-component polyurethane spray foams should always be used in conjunction with a certified respirator program in addition to safety glasses or goggles, nitrile gloves, and clothing that protects from skin exposure. Required respirators must be NIOSH approved and medical evaluation and training must be attained before use.
