Feeding dos and Dont’s:
Chickens are avid omnivores; they’ll try almost anything, which adds to the convenience of using a compost litter system. But there are a few things that chickens shouldn’t consume, and these should go straight to the compost pile:

Eggshells or anything resembling them will encourage the bad habit of egg-eating.

Anything moldy, including bread or that unidentified stuff from the back of the refrigerator, can make them ill.

Coffee grounds, tea bags, houseplant pruning, pet hair and other household waste doesn’t provide any food value and may endanger their health.
Along with their commercial ration, your hens enjoy a variety of discarded goodies from your vegetable garden and kitchen, including stale baked goods,cereal,pasta and cheese. Try to include fresh greens in their daily”scratch feed” such as tender weeds, leafy vegetables or grass clippings. A source of grit, such as crushed oyster shells, will aid in the hens’ digestive process and provide calcium for strong eggshells.
Choosing Chickens:
Every hen will be happier and healthier with a compost litter system, but some breeds will be easier to manage than others. According to Jeremy Hobson and celia lewis in Keeping Chickens: Essential Guide to Enjoying Chickens and getting the best from chickens(David & Charles,2007), the dual-purpose breeds-those most suitable for both egg and meat production-are temperamentally better suited for backyard or farmstead flocks. They’re less flighty than the layer breeds, easier to handle and work around in the coop and yard, and better at scratching and foraging. Dual-purpose breeds to consider are the Rhode Island Red, Dominique,New Hampshire Red, Plymouth Rock, Sussex and Wyandotte.
Safe Manure Handling
Why not bypass the compost bin and put all that nutrient-rich, discarded litter directly on the garden? Because fresh, high-nitrogen poultry manure will damage plant growth if applied directly to the garden soil durning the growing season. Manure also contains harmful bacteria and other pathogens. These pathogens are sharply reduced or eliminated durning the composting process, but they otherwise may pose a health hazard. In The Complete Compost Gardening Guide, authors Barbara Pleasant and Deborah L. Martin remind us to use common sense when handling manure, including wearing gloves and washing hands often. And fresh produce should always be washed before it’s eaten, regardless of how it was grown.

Original plans, designed by me in the spring of 2009.
 
I took photos when I built my coop, and wrote up easy to follow plans which include simple step-by-step instructions, a complete materials list with estimated costs, as well as detailed cutting diagrams to build your own chicken coop.
 
Using just basic tools – circular saw, jigsaw, hammer, electric drill/screwdriver, etc. you can easily build this coop over the course of a weekend.
 
Painted a pretty teal blue with a cedar shingle hinged roof, the coop is attractive as well as functional.  The vinyl linoleum floor inside is ready to be covered with shavings/straw and along with the hinged coop roof makes cleaning a breeze. With metal mesh air vents and three nesting boxes also with a hinged roof, the coop will make a comfortable and safe home for your chickens winter and summer.Plans include detailed materials list and cost estimate, detailed cutting diagrams, plus the tools needed (all basic – circular saw, hammer, electric drill, etc) and easy step-by-step assembly instructions with full color progress photographs as well as several different views of the finished coop.The coop will measure 4′ x 6′ not including the nesting boxes – large enough for 10-12 chickens – and will have three attached nesting boxes (each approximately 12″ square) with a hinged lid to collect the eggs without having to go inside, two roosts, side air vents with latching doors, a latching front round vent and a latched door with a ramp for your chickens to get in and out. The coop also has a hinged roof for easy access for cleaning, refilling food and water.
 
If you are fairly handy, you can build this coop yourself for around $250 – a fraction of what it costs to buy one preassembled. Similar sized 24-square foot coops retail for upwards of $800-$1200. I costed out all the materials at Lowe’s and the total cost was approximately $250 – and you can reduce the cost substantially by using scrap lumber, screws, paint, brushes and boards you have around the house already. The included materials list makes it super easy to just bring the list to Lowe’s or Home Depot and they will supply you with everything you need to complete this coop.You can even downsize the plans easily to a slightly smaller 4′x5′ coop (perfect for 8-10 chickens) or even a 4′x4′ size (perfect for under 6 chickens) which will also reduce the cost involved. It took me approximately 20 hours over the course of one weekend to construct this house, and that included writing up the plans. I am not a contractor or professional builder. I’m just a regular, fairly handy, stay-at-home farm wife with a new ‘family’ of 6 chickens and 2 ducklings who needed a nice home !

Jerome made me a set of hitches one year ago. Because I am fairly new at farming, it took me a while to really use them hard – plowing in heavy, wet clay. The EZ-HITCH is the best accessory I have on my tractor.  Better then the Air Conditioned Cab, or the MP3 player!!  The EZ-HITCH makes swapping out my implements a snap.  What used to take 30 minutes can now be done in less then 3.  I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder, and was forced to keep my arm in a sling.  However, because of the EZ-HITCH I was still able to swap out all of my implements.  The tall back on the *J-HOOKS*  make it impossible to get too close or stay too far from the implement you are hooking up.  If I fail to line the tractor up squarely with the implement the *J-HOOKS*  do it for me.  I no longer have to worry about back aches or headaches when dealing with my implements.
