The title page of this work is missing, and thus the above details have been surmised from the pagination and the information within the text.

As can be seen from the photos the volume has a plain library binding, with a leather spine, with cloth covered boards. The cloth is a bit scuffed and grubby, and the spine extremities a little rubbed and worn. The titles, library name, and references are embossed to spine. Internally, the endpapers and blanks to the front and rear are not original, are a little grubby. A library bookplate has been removed to the top edge of the inside front board, and there are small remnants. An 18thC bookplate has been preserved and mounted on a blank to front. This leaf has a blind stamp to the top, several references and dates, is rather grubby and marked, and has two ink stamps and a hand written reference to the reverse. The engraved bookplate states W. Hogarth underneath as the designer. As stated the engraved title page is missing. The first original leaf present is the dedication, which is signed London this 26 of May 1592. The dedication leaf has been repaired to corners and bottom margin, with some loss of text to the top corner, this leaf and the following preface leaf have been trimmed to edges. The 10 leaves of prelims are rather grubby darkened with foxing, more so the first few leaves, which are rather chipped, nicked and tatty to edges, and one page has a faint contemporary name. The corners and edges of the leaves throughout are thumbed and worn, and thus the corners have a smooth rounded appearance. The last three leaves to the rear are very darkened and grubby, chipped and tatty, with some crude repairs. The leaves are uniformly lightly browned and grubby throughout. There is very pale staining to the tops of leaves throughout, but is mostly rather hard to seen as it has blended into the general colour of the leaves. The soft worn edges are naturally nicked and a little torn in places throughout a few leaves have a small chip to corners. A few margins have some contemporary ink scribbling to fore edge margins. One leaf has a small hole to a browned spot on fore edge, and the following leaf has a small chip to fore edge, (affecting few letters of margin notes), text leaf has three repairs to fore edge margin/corners affecting a little lettering, and there is scattered foxed and browned spots to some leaves throughout. Many of the leaves are worn or trimmed closely to the top margins, affecting some page titles or numbering to some sections.

There are 20 pages of prelims, pages 1-1305, plus 3 pages

This is an extremely rare early edition of this famous and fabulous history of England (and much about Scotland and Ireland). This work was to be a great influence on William Shakespeare when he wrote his historic plays (Shakespeare was yet to make his name). When this work was written Elizabeth I was still on the throne, and thus the largest section of the history is devoted to the events of her reign, which in particular are truly fascinating, and because contemporary to the author, is packed with detail.

A wonderful work with reports on such things as – the execuion of Mary Queen of Scots, sickness in oxford, monstrous births, earthquakes, examples of sorcerers, voyages, discoveries, excecutions, murders, wars, riots, plots, voyages of Francis Drake, 4000 Londoners shot, the Spanish Armada, Sir Philip Sidney, Norfolk, Walsingham, and the Earl of Leicester, and other notable names of the day, also includes a list of ships sent to meet the Armada, among them are Drake’s revenge, and The May Flower, which was to become more famous 28 years later as the vessel which crarried the pilgrims to America.

A scare and truly enthralling history, which is hard to put down.

[History of Science - Scientific Revolution] [Astronomy] [Telescope and Telescopic Observations] [Cosmology - Copernican (Heliocentric) Model]

[Physics - Mechanics, Hydrostatics] [Mathematics and Geometry] [Scientific Instruments]

Printed in Florence by Giovanni Gaetano Tartini, and Santi Franchi, 1718. Complete in 3 volumes.

Text in Italian and Latin. Illustrated with fine full-page engraved portrait of Galileo, a fine engraved fold-out plate of Galileo’s calculating instrument, and numerous woodcuts in text.

SECOND EDITION OF GALILEO’S COLLECTED WORKS, edited by Tommaso Buonaventuri (in collaboration with Guido Grandi and Benedetto Bresciani), who contributed a detailed preface.
“Pregiata edizione” (VALUABLE EDITION) – Riccardi I, 520.

A complete, wide-margined and very clean set (with an excellent provenance) of this superbly produced Florentine edition!
The first two volumes constitute, essentially, a reissue (with some additions) of the first edition, edited by Manolessi and printed in Bologna in 1656-5. (Like the 1656 edition, this one was still published without the two pro-Copernican works banned by the Inquisition: Dialogo dei due massimi sistemi del mondo and the Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina).
The third volume of this set is devoted to previously unpublished material, including a number of Galileo’s letters, and notes and commentaries on his work by Castelli and Viviani.

“Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science” (Stephen Hawking).

Galileo Galilei (1564 – 1642) was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher who played a key role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations, and support for Copernicanism. Galileo has been called the “father of modern observational astronomy”, the “father of modern physics”, and “the Father of Modern Science”. The motion of uniformly accelerated objects, taught in nearly all high school and introductory college physics courses, was studied by Galileo as the subject of kinematics. His contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus, the discovery of the four largest satellites of Jupiter (named the Galilean moons in his honour), and the observation and analysis of sunspots. Galileo also worked in applied science and technology, inventing an improved military compass and other instruments.

Galileo’s championing of Copernicanism was controversial within his lifetime, when a large majority of philosophers and astronomers still subscribed to the geocentric view that the Earth is at the centre of the universe. After 1610, when he began publicly supporting the heliocentric view, which placed the Sun at the centre of the universe, he met with bitter opposition from some philosophers and clerics, and two of the latter eventually denounced him to the Roman Inquisition early in 1615. In February 1616, although he had been cleared of any offence, the Catholic Church nevertheless condemned heliocentrism as “false and contrary to Scripture”, and Galileo was warned to abandon his support for it—which he promised to do. When he later defended his views in his most famous work, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, published in 1632, he was tried by the Inquisition, found “vehemently suspect of heresy”, forced to recant, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

The set contains the following major works of Galileo on astronomy, mathematics, mechanics and hydraulics:

Sidereus Nuncius (“The Starry Messenger”) first published in 1610, THE FOUNDATION WORK OF MODERN ASTRONOMY, CONTAINING THE FIRST ACCOUNT OF ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERIES MADE WITH THE TELESCOPE. The work presents Galileo’s observations of the Moon and, particularly, his discovery and observations of four satellites around Jupiter. The lunar observations showed that the surface of the moon was not smooth and perfectly spherical, but was pitted with craters and had mountains. The observations of the Jovian satellites showed that the Earth was not the only center of rotation in the universe. Both these discoveries were blows to the Aristotelian world-view which was geocentric and maintained that everything above the Earth was perfect and incorruptible.
Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens in early January 1610 “… with startling results. Not only was the moon revealed to be mountainous and the Milky Way to be a congeries of separate stars, contrary to Aristotelian principles, but a host of new fixed stars and four satellites of Jupiter [which he named the Medicea Siderea in honor of Cosimo II de' Medici] were promptly discovered. Working with great haste but impressive accuracy, Galileo recited these discoveries in the Sidereus nuncius, published at Venice early in March 1610″ (DSB).
Il Saggiatore (“The Assayer”), first published in 1623, often called GALILEO’S “SCIENTIFIC MANIFESTO.” Il Saggiatore is certainly one of the most celebrated polemics in the history of physical science. The work arose “out of the controversy over the three comets of 1618. The Jesuit Orazio Grassi had published a work … attacking Galileo’s arguments in 1619. Galileo’s reply Il Saggiatore contains his most important ideas on the philosophy of scientific investigation” (Honeyman). This is the book containing Galileo’s famous statement that mathematics is the language of God. Galileo insisted that physics should be mathematical: only through mathematics can one achieve lasting truth in physics.
Il Saggiatore is the first of Galileo’s works written after the Inquisiton’s warning not to propound or defend the Copernican theory, which of course he does, albeit in covert form.
Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari (“Letters on Sunspots”), first published in 1613, famously containing GALILEO’S FIRST PUBLISHED ENDORSEMENT OF THE COPERNICAN MODEL ! Galileo wrote the Istoria e dimostrazioni in the form of letters to Marcus Welser, arguing that sunspots appeared on the surface of the sun and were not tiny satellites of it. Based on observations of their motion, Galileo concluded that the sun rotated on a fixed axis.
Marcus Welser of Augsburg had published a treatise on sunspots by the jesuit Christopher Scheiner in 1612, and sent a copy of it to Galileo for his opinion. Galileo replied in three long letters, “demolishing Scheiner’s conjecture that the spots were tiny planetS” (DSB V, p. 242) and giving an account of his discovery of sunspots, thus claiming priority over Scheiner. In this work, Galileo announced for the first time his discovery of the satellites of Jupiter and also “spoke out decisively for the Copernican system for the first time in print [... and] found a place for his first published mention of the concept of conservation of angular momentum and an associated inertial concept. During its composition he had taken pains to determine the theological status of the idea of incorruptibility of the heavens, finding that this was regarded by churchmen as an Aristotelian rather than a Catholic dogma” (ibid). However, this work prompted some disquiet in theological circles and attacks on Galileo soon followed; although Galileo did not immediately suffer any injurious consequences, these attacks initiated a series of events which culminated in his trial and imprisonment.
Discorsi e Dimostrazioni Matematiche, intorno a due nuove scienze (“Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences”), first printed in 1638, THE FIRST MODERN TEXTBOOK OF PHYSICS AND THE FOUNDATION OF THE SCIENCE OF MECHANICS. Sentenced by the Inquisition to permanent house arrest in 1633, Galileo took up his unfinished work on mechanics at the urging of his old friend Ascanio Piccolomini, Archbishop of Siena. The book was completed by mid-1635, but publication was delayed by the search for a printer. Unable to obtain an ecclesiastical licence to print the work in Venice, Galileo was obliged to have it printed by the Elzeviers in Leiden.
The mathematical analyses of the Discorsi provide the foundation for the philosophical exposition of the Dialogo and thus are “considered by most scientists as Galileo’s greatest work” (PMM). The work is divided into four dialogues between the interlocutors of the earlier Dialogo. The first two contain the entirety of Galileo’s work on the mechanics of materials, and constitute the first publication in the field of strength of materials. The last two dialogues are devoted to the mathematical science of motion, or kinematics. The Two New Sciences laid the foundation for modern physics, not only through Galileo’s application of mathematics to the study of motion, but also because in this work some of the fundamental problems of physics were posed along with discussions of their possible solutions.
Le operazioni del compasso geometrico, et militare (“The operation of the geometric and military compass”), first published privately in 1606, GALILEO’S FIRST PRINTED WORK and THE FIRST PUBLISHED WORK ON AN ANALOGUE CALCULATOR. Galileo may have issued this pamphlet in order to establish his sole priority as the inventor of the “geometrical and military compass,” or sector a calculating and observation device that he had begun manufacturing in 1597. It was based on the proportional compass, an instrument first developed by Commandino prior to 1568, but Galileo’s version included numerous additions and improvements that rendered it the most useful mathematical instrument of its period and even beyond. As a calculating device, Galileo’s compass remained unsurpassed until the advent of the slide rule in the mid-nineteenth century.
Galileo’s compass consisted of a pointed sector, made from a pair of pivoted arms, which could be converted to an observation instrument by the addtion of a quadrant. The front faces of the arms were engraved with a scale of logarithmically based “lines of numbers” by which an operator could compute the results of any arithmetical multiplication or division to within an accuracy of 0.1. Supplementary scales, including squares, cubes, roots, and densities of metals and stones, were also added. Historian of science Stillman Drake noted that Galileo’s ‘compass’ revolutionized and democratized practical mathematics in the same way that the pocket calculator has done in our own time.

The success and popularity of Galileo’s instrument naturally made it attractive to imitators, and Galileo deliberately omitted any illustration of the compass in his treatise as a deterrrent to unauthorized copying. At the very end of his life, Galileo finally authorized a large engraving illustrating his ‘compass’ (included in Vol.I of this edition), thereby ending the virtual monopoly on its manufacture that he had been careful to preserve.
Discorso … Intorno alle cose, che stanno in su l’acqua, o che in quella si muovono (“Discourse on Bodies in Water”), first published in 1612, Galileo’s important and controversial treatise on hydrostatics, refuting the Aristotelian notion that the buoyancy of bodies depends upon their shape, and demonstrating the Archimedean theory that flotation is a function of the relative densities of the floating body and its surrounding medium. The work also contains his earliest announcements of some of Galileo’s astronomical discoveries: on sun-spots, the “triple” appearance (i.e. the rings) of Saturn, and the phases of Venus. Galileo greatly extended the scope of Archimedes’ propositions, in particular by applying the concept of momento to hydrostatics and transferring “the notion of virtual velocities from the lever’s arms to the vertical displacement of body and water”. (Biagiolo, p. 187)

Also included are Galileo’s lesser known early works, such as the short 1586 tract (perhaps his earliest) entitled La Billancetta (“The Little Balance”) describing an accurate balance to weigh objects in air or water; as well as his ca. 1600 Paduan Le Meccaniche (“Mechanics”).
The 3rd volume includes, among other things, a number of relevant works by Galileo’s colleagues, associates and disciples, such as Trattato delle resistenze … per illustrare le opere del Galileo, a treatise on the resistance of solids to break, by Galileo’s last pupil, a prominent engineer and mathematician, Vincenzo Viviani (1622-1703).

William Vernon Harcourt (1789 – 1871), the founder of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (with his armorial bookplates on front pastedowns of each volume, with Harcourt Arms and motto).
W. Vernon Harcourt was born at Sudbury, Derbyshire, a younger son of Edward Vernon-Harcourt, Archbishop of York.
Having served for five years in the Royal Navy in the West Indies he went up to Christ Church, Oxford, intending to take holy orders. In 1824 he became canon of York and rector of Wheldrake in Yorkshire, and in 1837 rector of Bolton Percy. The Yorkshire School for the Blind and the Castle Howard Reformatory both owe their existence to his energies.

Having developed a great interest in science while at the university, he took an active part in the foundation of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, of which he was the first president. The laws and the plan of proceedings for the British Association for the Advancement of Science were drawn up by him; and Harcourt was elected president in 1839. His spare time until quite late in life was occupied with scientific experiments. He collaborated with Sir George Gabriel Stokes for example. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1824.

Macmillan & Bowes, Cambridge (with their ca. 1900 bookseller’s ticket of at bottom of front pastedown in each volume).

Condition:
Very Good antiquarian condition. Complete. Boards rubbed and worn with some scuffing, leather a bit grubby in places; corners bumped and worn. Neatly rebacked in 19th century, and with some minor (more recent) repairs to joints, spines and some corners. Hinges in Vol.III slightly weakened, but still solid. All bindings tight, and all boards securely attached.
Internally near fine with only light spotting and occasional minor soiling (mainly marginal). A short closed tear to the folding plate near gutter (without loss). Generally, an attractive, clean, wide-margined set of this desirable edition.

The hourly book (also Horarium; (spätlat. horarium = clock), livre d’ heures [livr ˈdœr], that; (frz.= hourly book)) were the structure after the Brevier of the Roman-catholic church very similar a prayer and a devotion book for the hourly prayer. Certainly they were first later for laymen, also for clerics. The hourly books came into 13. Century up and displaced the Psalter from its controlling role as Gebetbuch. In the late Middle Ages they were in circles rich, read-well-informed aristocracy and city aristocracy the private devotion book par excellence. Principal items of the hourly books formed a marianisches Offizium and the Totenoffizium. The designation hourly book leads itself off of therein the contained, to certain hours at praying day times.
Originally beginning around midnight with the Matutin, which was summarized in the morning for practical reasons in the course of the years with the Laudes at three o’clock, one prayed in the morning in the three-hour rhythm starting from six o’clock prime, third, the Sext, the Non (Liturgie) the Vesper (Liturgie) and the Komplet. In hourly books were also Cisiojanus Merkverse, which helped during the dating of the mobile celebrations of the church yearly. Gold foil ornaments could afford to larger extent only princes, bishops and rich monasteries. One painted with thin brushes and water or opaque colors, drawn with india ink and goose keel. As red color means red ochers, Zinnober, Menninge, carmine, Vermiculum, Folium, kite blood, Krapp found and later also Brasilholz use. The precious magenta served in the antiquity and in the early Middle Ages to dyeing some particularly magnificent Pergamentmanuskripte, which were then described with gold or silver ink. For yellow colours stood yellow ochers, Auripigment, lead-yellow, Safran and Wau for order, for green colours green earth, malachite-green and for verdigris as well as Ultramarin, Azurit and Indigo as blue color means. For knowing and black tones lead and bone white were soot-black used and/or. As bonding agents in the Middle Ages fish glue, Egg or rubber were used.

Hourly books were usually provided with book decoration. Individual copies belong to the splendour-fullest ever manufactured illustrated handwriting. At the most famous and artistically most valuable the hourly books of the duke of Berry (1340-1416) might be, among them the Très of riches heures (Chantilly, mash. Condé, ms. 65), which with the contemporaries as non plus ultra a bibliophiler preciousness was already valid.
