So – if you’re a first time toilet-training parent, as I was, you’re probably wondering when and how pants like these will be effective.
These training pants are designed to be a safe-guard between little one’s accidents and his/her clothing – keep the moisture and mess inside the pants. Here is the company description:
Our marvelous TRAINING PANT! This is a well designed pant of superb quality. It has a great fit, is attractive and comfortable, and built to last. Easy for little ones to put on and take off by themselves! All the protection you need – but without a lot of bulk.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE TRAINING PANT:
• Stretchy lycra bindings around the legs and tummy for a comfortable and customized fit
• Soft polyester knit on the outside and an interior layer of super strong and durable waterproof laminate
• Our cozy flannel lining is so soft against a baby’s skin, yet does not prevent the child from feeling the moisture – so that your little one is encouraged to potty train faster!
• 2 layers of absorbent terry padding right where it counts! Thirsty enough to absorb even a major spill… ( I will qualify that statement – as it depends on how plentiful your little one’s “major” spills can be. It’s very good for minor and average spills – but my little critters can overwhelm it with a major spill.)
Available in white or a bold and fun print that toddlers will love!
So, when and how do I use the training pants to help my little ones toilet train?
Setting the Stage: At about 18-20 months, I begin setting the baby on the toilet during each diaper change. Do you remember that blue suction bulb you were given for cleaning out their noses when they were born? Dig it out again! Before the diaper change begins, I fill that bulb with pleasantly warm water. I take off the wet diaper, transfer the baby to the edge of the toilet seat, and help them balance with one of my hands (sit little boys far enough back and down that their “pistol” is naturally pointing down into the toilet). With the other hand, I gently squeeze warm water onto the little girl’s tummy or the little boy’s pistol. Praise liberally whenever the little body responds by doing bathroom, and make it generally enjoyable. This process has two major benefits: emptying the bladder before applying the new diaper will make it last much longer, and the little one gets comfortable with the toilet long before they need to begin controlling their bladder and bowel functions.
Readiness: Each child is ready at a different point, and in different ways. Don’t worry about rushing it. I have very clever little children who readily used the toilet when I set them on it – and even knew to talk about using the toilet, but the first two just weren’t ready to control their bladder functions until 1 week before their 3rd birthdays. Because we didn’t rush or pressure them, training proceeded more quickly and easily than I had expected. Some tell-tale signs my first two gave me were:
Learning to recognize when she was wet, and telling me.
Beginning to want to do/undo the diaper himself.
Telling me that she “kept her bottom closed” (her own description).
Learning to predict #2 before it happens on a regular basis.
Varying Techniques
My little boy was simply ready – all of a sudden, 1 week before his 3rd birthday. We switched from diapers to these training pants for daytime, and never had to go backwards. About the time that he was staying dry every day, we switched him to underwear for the daytime and introduced training pants for night (as he was starting to wake up dry most mornings anyway). Now, at 4 1/2 years old, accidents are rare, but do still happen. That’s just all part of the growing up process. Just be smart and cover the mattress and pillow in waterproof casings!
My little girl is a strong-willed critter. She was wanting training pants long before she was physically ready or able to control her bladder. So, for her, training pants were a reward. Anytime that she predicted bathroom, have a dry diaper, and do bathroom on the toilet, she “earned” training pants. Inevitably, those same pants would be wet the next time, and she would have to switch back into a diaper (until she could predict again), but it was motivating. For her, as for her older brother, 1 week before her 3rd birthday was the magic moment. She suddenly began predicting with great faithfulness, and no longer did #2 anywhere but the toilet. At that point, training pants became a given. She started the day with training pants, and as long as we didn’t run out of training pants in the course of a day, she didn’t have to go back to the diaper until bedtime. By four months later, she had become so faithful at staying dry, that underwear was the norm – and having to switch to training pants was the “consequence” of getting her underwear wet. By five months, she was ready to use training pants at night (which are good enough to catch 1 accident, but not 2). I anticipate that soon, she’ll be staying dry faithfully at nights, and we can retire the training pants until my #3 child is ready.
Who knows how my next two boys will do when it is their turn? All I know is that they will find their own ways to be unique!
Why do I recommend these training pants over the others on the market?
Comfort: These covers are soft inside, and have well-covered elastic at the legs and waist. Unlike the cheap “cloth” training pants from Target and Walmart, there are no sharp elastic bands or plastic crinkle to contend with.
Easy Care: Just throw them in the same loads as your diapers. I use a warm wash with a long aggition and double rinse, and dry on high heat. It is best to avoid fabric softeners, bleach, or whitening agents for both covers and diapers.
Economy: Again, by going with a high-quality cloth rather than the disposables, you are saving your budget! I will say that these training pants do not last as long as the Bummis diaper covers (which only begin to wear out on the 3rd child), but you can easily get through a long toilet training with 1-2 children per pair.
Size and Color Details:
Bummis Training Pants come in 3 sizes:
SMALL: 9-14 kg (20-30 lbs)
This is a good size for the average 2-3 year old to start in.
MEDIUM: 14-18 kg (30-40 lbs)
I never needed a larger size than this – although if you have a large or older child who still needs the safeguard of absorbant pants, you may need a large size.
LARGE: 18+ kg (40+ lbs)
This size is available on an advanced notice basis. It is uncommonly requested, so I do not keep it in stock. I can, however, special order it at any time and have in your hands within 5-6 weeks.
Color Options:
White
Jungle Print

How many do I need? This really depends on how “faithful” your little one is at predicting bathroom when you start to use these pants. I would advise no less than 3 pants (1 clean, 1 dirty, and 1 ready), and personally prefer to have 5-8 around - so that I don’t absolutely have to get to the laundry on time!
Please feel free to call or email me with additional questions!
God Bless!
Thank you for looking – and for supporting a work-at-home mom!!
P.S. It is always best to check with me first for color and sizes in stock. This is an item that sells in a much smaller volume than my cloth diapers, so I don’t have as large of a backstock of these as I do other supplies. If we need to order your size/color, it typically takes 5-6 weeks before you will have it in hand.
