MUSEUM WORTHY EARLY GEORGE III STERLING SILVER SALVER; ELEGANT LEAF AND BEAD BORDER; SASH AND RIBBON DECORATION & BALL AND CLAW FEET; RICHARD RUGG “SALVER SPECIALIST”, LONDON, 1776; 35 OUNCES; EXCELLENT CONDITION
We are exceptionally pleased to offer this museum worthy early George III sterling silver ribbon and sash decorated salver. From the highly regarded London salver “specialist” Richard Rugg. Date marked 1776. The first year of the American War for independence. Rugg apprenticed under James Gould in 1738. First listed 1754. Known almost exclusively for fine trays and salver. Numerous military and royal commissions. And work often in the Chinese taste. Examples of his work are found in major collections. Including the famed Clark Art Institute. Which displays no fewer than four Rugg salver. This important early George III sterling silver salver in classic circular form. Elegant gently scalloped raised leaf and bead rim. Followed by Neo-classical inspired draping sash. Supported by raised florette alternating with ribbon and bow stay. The design very much like fine French silver of the 18th and 19th century. Never monogrammed. The salver supported perfectly atop boldly fashioned shield cap rippling knuckle ball and claw feet. A foot design not often seen in Georgian silver.
Hallmarked as shown. This important George III sterling silver ribbon and sash salver is 12 1/4 inches diameter. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling construction weighs 35 ounces. There is absolutely no “give” whatever to the centre of the salver. Even when held completely on end.In excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands even on table or display shelf. The elegant leaf and bead border and sash and ribbon decoration retain their original crisp, vibrant hand chased detail. Faint lines and mild surface scuffs, none can be felt.
For the discerning collector of the finest Georgian period sterling. Focused upon examples from London silver “specialists”. A museum worthy George III sterling silver ribbon and sash decorated ball and claw foot salver. From renowned London salver “specialist” Richard Rugg in 1776. In excellent condition.
