Ladies compact
Up for auction is a ladies compact with a lovely enameled/guilloche design. The compact is silver in color with an *engine turned design. The lid is a striking blue in color with a yellow center that has a pink rose. Notice all of the detailing…this is fantastic!!
There is a “handle” that can be moved into different positions. This would allow you to get a better hold on the compact while applying your make up. It also acts as a stand to display the compact )
Inside there is a mirror and compartments for powder. There is a powder well that has 3 options…closed, sifter and fully open. This compact could be placed on your vanity or dresser, carried in your purse, or put on display.
It’s gorgeous!
This is unmarked, so I am selling it as silverplate (not sterling). It was made around the early to mid 1900’s…guaranteed!
Measurements:
Width: 2 1/8″
Depth: 1/2″
Weight: 51 grams
31.1 grams = 1 troy ounce
Marks: unmarked
Condition: The compact has no dings, dents, chips, wear, etc… The mirror is perfect and the top opens and closes like it should. There may be something missing inside where the mirror is?
Rating = 10 out of 10 (unless something is missing )
I selling off a personal collection of 100+ vintage and antique compacts on Ebay over the next number of weeks. There are many Estee Lauder, sterling & enamel compacts, Max Factor and other collectibles. If you are interested in this type of item, please see photos and keep checking my auctions.
*Engine turning is the act of cutting geometric patterns in a rotating metal surface with a stationary cutting tool called a rose engine. A similar type of engraving can be done with a straight-line engine, which is used for such patterns as Geneva stripes. The application is a delicate process. The craftsman must mount the piece to be decorated on his machine and ensure that all components are properly aligned. Then, the intricate pattern is carved into the metal line by line (or, in engine turning terms, thread by thread). The engraver must be careful not to carve too deeply, and careful to apply consistent force for each thread-though this process involves machinery, the artistry and technique of the craftsman is of great importance.
These classic machines, which were run by hand, are no longer produced. The last machines were manufactured around 1948-1949. Most of the machines used today to do this type of work were made between 1850 and 1948.

IMPORTANT International Shipping IMPORTANT
It is the responsibility of the buyer to pay duty/VAT tax. These fees are not included in the item price or shipping cost. Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. This is a fee that your country collects and has nothing to do with me as a seller. I am often asked to lie on the customs forms so that the buyer can get around paying these fees. I will not lie on the forms, so please don’t ask me to do so.
I ship international items via the U.S. Postal Service. Most items I will ship first class mail as long as they don’t exceed $100.00 in value. First class does not include insurance or tracking which means I will not be responsible for a package if it gets damaged or lost. Due to recent lost packages that I had to pay for…anything that sells for over $100 will automatically be sent via priority mail which is generally around $25.00. Priority mail has tracking and insurance included in the price. Please keep these shipping costs in mind when bidding on my items. You can always contact me for an exact shipping quote if you intend on bidding more than $100.00 for an item. I will combine the cost of shipping if you win more than one auction and a second item generally ships free or for a very low amount. Check my feedback, I am very fair on my shipping fees.
SPECIAL NOTE: The United States heightened their security measures for packages shipped overseas on November 18, 2010. This has slowed down shipping on a lot of my items. Packages that used to take 7-10 days can take up to 4-6 weeks. I don’t have any control over this, so please be patient if your package takes longer than expected. Shipping priority often ensures that it will be delivered within 10 days. So, if time is important to you, I suggest that you opt for the priority shipping route.
U.S. Shipping & Insurance
I ship via the USPS and I DO combine shipping fees. If you win more than one auction, I will take the highest shipping fee and add .75 cents – $1.00 for each additional item…sometimes I can add them for free if it stays under a certain weight. Included in your shipping fee is delivery confirmation & insurance against loss or damage to the item. I insure 95% of my items through an outside source. On the rare occassion that an insurance claim has to be made, this ensures that you get refunded your money quickly and without a lot of hassle. The USPS can be a pain in the rear. :o)
Payment Terms
Payment is due within ten (10) days of auction close unless you are bidding on other items. You can send me an email and I will extend the payment due date. At this time, I accept PayPal. If you aren’t able to pay with PayPal, please contact me for possible other arrangements. )
Satisfaction
Please read my feedback, most customers feel that my items are much better in person than how I described to them to be on the auction page. I only make refunds for errors in listings, I do not make them due to buyers remorse. I list all obvious flaws – this does not mean I will catch every single pin head size ding on a 150 year old item. This is what I consider “expected”. If I say it has a wavy feel to it and you don’t know what that means, please email me before bidding. Don’t wait until you have received it to say “well, I saw that you said wavy…but, I didn’t know what that meant” or ”I looked up the maker after I received my spoon and he was in business in 1855, not 1854″. Please use your own reference material to determine the age/authenticity. Look it up before you bid, not after you receive the item. I may be getting my information from a different book, or I may have made a typo, or I just plain might be wrong. Errors on my part are never intentional, but they do happen ~ afterall, I am human On occasion I add to my descriptions, please check for additions at the bottom of this page before placing your final bid.
If you do receive an item that you aren’t happy with, email me. I don’t like to have unhappy customers, only happy ones. Check my feedback, I’m a fair and honest seller. Please give me the chance to fix the problem before you leave a negative feedback. I make my living selling on Ebay and when a customer leaves a negative feedback, that hurts my reputation (and my feelings . If I do make an error, I refund shipping costs ~ BOTH ways!
Requests for refunds must be made within 3 days of receiving your purchase and items must be returned within 7 days of notifying me, in their original condition.
