Carved Compendium / Sewing Kit

This useful
compendium combines a needle
case, thimble holder and bobbins of thread and has nicely detailed
carving. The color, grain and patina of the wood are gorgeous.
The
condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and it
measures 5 1/2″ high.
The thimble
has a pretty scrolling band and a rope style rim. It tests 800/1000
pure solid silver. It has a rubbed mark on the side. The top has the 8
petaled flower/star
design used by several German thimble makers. There is a fine split
around the edge of the top that looks to be where it wasn’t soldered
properly rather than needle damage. It’s about an American size 9.
This
style of wooden needlework item was carved
in the Black Forest area of Germany at the end of the 19th century and
sold as souvenirs.

Silver Sewing Set

This
little
French set has an oval leather case and inside the fitted
interior are a pair of silver handled
scissors, a silver needle case and a silver thimble. They have a
scallop shell design and all are marked with
the French boar’s head hallmark used for 800/1000 pure silver from
1838. The
scissors have tight blades, sharp points and cut well. They are
3 5/8″ long and are marked
“Nogent” which is the city
in France where
they were made. This is a famous cutlery region and the makers that
passed stringent quality requirements could belong to the guild and use
this mark.
The thimble
is in excellent
condition, crisp and in
round
with no holes, wear or other damage. It’s about an American size 6
and is gilded inside. The needle case has no dents or damage and fits
together well. The
little leather case is lined in the original velvet and silk and is in
great
condition
inside and out. It measures 5 1/8 x 3″ and snaps closed
properly with a push button catch.

This
beautiful needle book has marquetry covers and was made in Tunbridge
Wells
in the county of Kent, England in the late Victorian era. The
geometric mosaic pattern is made of small bits of different
colored woods and it’s different on each side.
Inside
are 4 wool flannel pages with some old
needles.

It is held
together with a silk spine and
both it and the needle pages are original. There is a small bit of
separation in the mosaic, but it seems to be sturdy & strong. It’s
in otherwise excellent
condition inside and out with no chips or loss. It measures 2
1/8″ by 1 3/8″ closed.

Ornate Antique Silver
Gilt Needle Case

This
elegant solid
silver figural needle
case is in the form of a quiver of arrows and beautifully embossed on
both sides. It
is stamped with the French boar’s head hallmarks used on 800/1000 pure
silver
beginning in 1838.
It has been gilded with gold.

The
inside sleeve under the top has some dings but the silver
exterior is in excellent condition with no dents, splits or other
damage and it
closes snugly. It
is solid and heavy and measures 3 1/4″ long. It was probably once part
of a French silver
sewing set.

This lovely
old rosewood workbox has a lift
out
tray with fitted recesses for the tools.
The
compartment below is for threads and
projects and is lined with patterned paper. The bottom area contains 2
perforated floral embroidery patterns, a cow bone tatting shuttle and
some embroidery silks. The tool tray has a matching set of mother of
pearl tools, steel scissors, a built in pin cushion, thread spools, a
packet of hooks and eyes, 2 needle packets and a sterling silver
thimble. 
The
mother of pearl tools include a stiletto, button hook, pen knife,
corkscrew and tweezers. They are all in great condition with no damage.
The steel scissors are nice ones with faceted bows. They have tight
blades, intact points and cut, but could use sharpening. The English
thimble has a faceted rim and a hand engraved leaf design on the wide
band. It is not marked but tests sterling silver. English
silversmiths
didn’t mark small items (and have to pay duty on them) until required
to by law in the 1880s. It is in nice condition with no holes or
repairs and is about an American size 8.
The work box
is in excellent condition. The
top has
some minor fine surface crackles in the veneer, but the box had no
cracks, chips, loss or other damage. The tray has been relined with
plush fabric, but is well done. The hinges are strong and it has the
original, working key.  It
measures 9 7/8″
wide by 6 5/8″ deep by 3 7/8″ tall.

Royal Mother of Pearl Scissors

These
beautifully carved mother of pearl scissors came from a fitted box of
Palais Royal sewing tools. The pearl handles are carved with leaf
designs & peacock feathers. Below are
gilded silver
mounts embossed with floral designs.

One bow has a
small broken section that has
been glued back in. There is no other damage and the repair is sturdy.
They cut well except at the very tips. The
steel
blades have intact points and no rust or damage. 
They
measure 3 5/8″ long and 1 5/8″ across the bows. A variety of
Palais
Royal scissors are
shown
on pp. 49-57 of Nerylla Taunton’s book Antique
Needlework Tools and Embroideries and Gay
Ann Rogers shows several pairs on p. 107 of her book The Illustrated History of
Needlework Tools. Postage
