7 x antique prosthetic glass eyes
These antique glass eyes are from a box of optical items and instruments from my great great grandfathers optical manufacturing firm, Priest and Ashmore in Sheffield.
The firm was established in 1832 so I believe the eyes will date from sometime between then and 1940 when the building was destroyed in the blitz.
The eyes are all blown glass.
The eyes are not first quality although some of the faults are quite minor. One of the brown eyes has a slight mark on the iris, one of the grey ones has minor speckles on the pupil, one of the grey/blue ones is dull and one has a scratch on the cornea. There is a bulge on the sclera on one of the blue ones although I’ve seen this often enough to think it is an intentional feature on some prosthetic eyes.
The remaining two have a brownish colour to the sclera (white) although the iris’s and pupils are great (see photos). One of these has a small hole in the back of the eye.

19th Century Abney Level By Lawrence & Mayo of London.

A super quality 19th century Abney Level by Lawrence & Mayo of london in Excellent condition & perfect working order.

Behind the top bar is a level tube which is rotated by the milled hand wheel. In use the object of which the height is to be determined is sighted through the instrument and the bubble tube is rotated until the bubble, viewed in a mirror in the sighting tube, is brought to the same position as the top of the sighted object.

Leather case has some age related surface & edge wear but is also excellent with strong hinges & rotate & catch.

Box measures:5 1/4 x 2 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches.

A superb instrument in excellent condition offered with no reserve!

Inclining String-Gnomon This is a portable sundial composed of a gilt teakwood rectangular box with hinged lid, with very beautiful decoration. Ulrich Schniep, the original maker of this ingenious sundial was granted a license in Munich in 1554 and was appointed as the time-telling instrument maker to Wilhelm V, Duke of Bavaria (1548-1626). The principal elements of this inclining string gnomon sundial includes an inclining hinged horizontal plate with engraving of the hour lines, sprung folding gnomon support with plummet for adjusting latitudes from 42° to 52°. The dial is equipped with a compass for compensating the declination error between magnetic and true north. Provenance: Masterpiece from the Time Museum, Chicago, inventory No. 1082.

Antique 1840 Pine Graduated Drawer Apothecary Cabinet

Description:
This is a very nice signed and perfectly clean antique early 19th C. C.1830, New England pine apothecary cabinet, It has four rows of three graduated drawers porcelain pulls, The top of the case and each drawer is all made with dovetail construction, it is a very well made piece and will be a awesome addition to a fine country decor.
The pieces is period signed in the back in pencil it is light and can just be seen in the photos. It reads : A.C. Weeks Madison Conn (it appears to read Madison)
The back of the cabinet is a two piece construction with chamfered edge, the largest board being 17+” wide.
Size:
Cabinet frame measures 24 1/4″ wide x 10 1 4′ deep x 24″ tall.
All the interior of the drawer are 8 5/8″ deep and all are about 6 1/2″ wide, from smallest they measure tall, 3 1/2″-4″-5″-6″.
Condition:
This piece was probably refinished about 50+ years ago, probably longer…it has a very nice color and patina. Some of the drawers are separated with a removable board, some not. The only apology to mention is at one time the chest sat on four bun feet which are long gone and the hardware was replaced when it was refinished long ago (the hardware used now is very old also looks to be from the 1920s…the drawers are lined with shelf paper, I removed one easily enough in one piece.
Looking for a real nice apothecary chest for the kitchen that you can use…buy this one!

& Coombs Antique Brass Microscope c1852

This is a classic, early design in the
Ross style of mid-19th century British microscope. It is signed: “King & Coombs
Opticians, Bristol, No. 130″ on the brass limb. King & Coombs worked at this address
between 1851 and 1853. The microscope
stands approximately 14 1/2″ tall in closed position, and features rack
and pinion focus. Mechanics are in fine
operating condition. The instrument comes with two lenses and one eyepiece.
Each objective has a matching brass canister with cap labeled “1 1/2 In.”,
and the other is labeled “4/10 In.”
The microscope has a sub-stage wheel
of stops condenser. The optical system is in fine working condition as is the sub-stage
mirror. The brass microscope has most of its original lacquer showing the lateral
brush marks of the hot lacquer process, appropriate to the age.

The microscope fits into its own tall,
hand dove-tailed mahogany case with brass carry handle, and lock with key.
Inside is a fitted accessory drawer. There are also two slide boxes. One contains two period scalpels. Accessories include two objectives with
original canisters, one eyepiece, brass tweezers, scissors, standing bulls-eye condenser, stage forceps, and live
box. The microscope is a very complete kit and in very good, working condition
for its age.

It is sold as is, and includes all
that is shown in the photos.

Antique Barograph with a drawer, marked Short and Mason. It has an unusual Horstmann movement, with a Gluck barrel. 35cm wide, 23cm tall. I have a few issues with this one, so I am starting it at an ultra low start to see what happens. Firstly the mechanism is hand engraved Short & Mason, rather than machine engraved, it isn’t very well done, so may have been added. The movement works well, but whilst the needle does rise and fall, it doesn’t seem to do it as much as I would expect, so it may need some work. The case looks to have had some restoration at some stage, and there is a scratch on the back. The lid to the barrel looks a little home made, and in truth it may never have had one. All of this is mentioned for accuracy. Please note that shipping rates include the cost of postage, and professional packaging materials to ensure the item arrives with you undamaged. Curta Type I Calculator

On auction a very fine type I Curta miniature calculator with serial # 52040. Produced in 1963 it is still with metal can and clearing ring instead of plastic ones of the later Curtas with higher serial numbers.

The condition of this Curta I is really immaculate, no dust, no scratches – nothing! Also inside no dust or dried oil, looks like being new. It works perfectly and exactly in a clicky way.
It is a very nice calculator, hardly to find, and comes with both original manuals.

Background of the Curta miniature calculator:

The Curta calculator was invented by Curt Herzstark, an Austrian. He developed it while being prisoner in german concentration camp Buchenwald during WW II. Being liberated in 1945 by Americans, Herzstark was able to save the concept of his revolutionary calculating machine. In 1947 he started production of the Curta in Liechtenstein. Until 1970, when the Curta could no longer compete with modern electronic calculators, only about 80.000 Curta I were produced.
