DESCRIPTION Fragment/pastiche. I was told this might be early to mid 19th century– possibly older. Such things are outside my area of expertise so I can’t warrant this. It is certainly a primitive and archaic old thing and reminds me of the table rugs you see in Dutch Renaissance paintings. I’ve listed some great oriental rugs this week– all are 100 years old or more. All have great colors and designs; very Antiques compatible. Please have a look at my other listings. As always, all things offered with no reserve and will not be sold early.

CONDITION
A fragment with pastiche borders. The photos tell the story. Please examine the photos carefully. I will respond promptly to email questions.

SHIPPING
$15 anywhere in the continental US for professional packing and full insurance with UPS ground service (3-5 days). USPS Priority International shipping: CANADA: $25 — EUROPE: $40. Anywhere else– please ask before you bid. I charge only actual postage; anything paid above the actual cost will be refunded.

INSCRIBED+DATED CAUCASIAN ARMENIAN CARPET. TURKMEN GULS

INSCRIBED+DATED CAUCASIAN ARMENIAN CARPET. TURKMEN GULS

Buy Now

Current price:

$2200

ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN ARMENIAN COLLECTOR CARPET, Inscribed and Dated 1922, South Caucasus region, and it comes in very good allover collector condition. The exact size is: 5′-1″ x 7′-6″ (155 x 229 cm). For any Caucasian weaving to exhibit Turkoman “Salor-gul” motifs as a field design is unusual and quite rare. I do not know what the inscription reads and I would appreciate a translation from any eBay viewer so I can share this information as an addendum to the listing. I have been told that the date reads 1922, but the weaver had a degree of difficulty executing the last two numbers. The weave, materials used, and natural dyes correspond with this age period of manufacturer. The condition is quite good with evenly low, but NOT worn pile. There were scattered expert repairs to small damaged areas accomplished prior to my purchase of the rug and this includes new side cord over-castings and reweaves to some ragged areas of the outermost pin borders at the top and bottom, now sewn back secure to prevent future loss. This work gives the carpet aesthetic eye appeal and makes the carpet serviceable as a decorative floor covering or wall hanging. The carpet is clean and collection ready. If you have any questions concerning this inscribed and dated Armenian carpet, only email Michael Phillips at phillipsrugs@comcast.net or feel free to call my studio phone (303) 885-7599. Please take a little extra time to view the other fine antique weavings of merit I have posted exclusively with eBay auction this week and remember to bookmark my eBay seller ID: IMOKUB2 (I am okay, you be too) to your “favorite sellers” list to see all my weekly future offerings having this age, beauty, quality, condition, rarity, and collect-ability. NOTICE: ALL of my eBay listings come with an unconditional 100% money back refund guarantee (including ALL s/h/ins. fees) if for ANY reason at all the winning bidder is unhappy with their purchase from me. GOOD LUCK BIDDING. A rare weaving with Armenian history.

RARE ANTIQUE CHODOR TURKOMAN “ERTMAN-GUL” CHUVAL. SUPER

12 March 2010
RARE ANTIQUE CHODOR TURKOMAN ERTMAN-GUL CHUVAL. SUPER

Buy Now

Current price:

$1338

RARE ANTIQUE CHODOR TURKOMAN CHUVAL FACING, Central Asian Steppes of Turkmenistan, Circa: 1850-1875, and in good, albeit abused, condition for the collector. The exact size is: 2′-10″ x 4′-0″ (86 x 122 cm). Asymmetrically knotted open to the right on natural grey and brown wool and goat hair warps plied together and wefts of un-dyed ivory cotton and natural medium brown camel hair or wool. A rare and early specimen of this type. Overall, it has good pile condition. There are fold wear lines in the field and the sides and ends show some loss, but most of these finishes are original and complete. Classic “Ertman-gul” field design with an unusual border surround element. 100% natural dyes with a purple/brown field and nice green! A bit battered and un-restored, but a beautiful and complete specimen of this rare type for the advanced Turkmen weaving collector specialist. Clean and collection ready. It will make a splendid wall hanging as is. There are only a few published “Ertman-gul” Chodor chuvals in the anitque oriental rug book literature, but to see a near-identically drawn mid-19th century example, including field and elem motifs, albeit with a different border, refer to the one published by Uwe Jourdan in “Oriental Rugs – Volume 5 – Turkoman”, 1989, plate 226, page 253. If you have any questions at all about this antique Chodor Turkomen collector’s chuval, email Michael Phillips at: phillipsrugs@comcast.net or feel free to call my studio at: (303) 885-7599. Please take a little extra time to view the other fine antique weavings of merit I have posted exclusively with eBay auction this week and remember to bookmark my eBay seller ID: IMOKUB2 (I am okay, you be too) to your “favorite sellers” list to see all of my weekly future offerings having this age, beauty, quality, condition, rarity, and collect-ability. VERY SPECIAL ANTIQUE BALUCH RUG with RARE DESIGN MOTIFS

VERY SPECIAL ANTIQUE BALUCH RUG with RARE DESIGN MOTIFS

Buy Now

Current price:

$2025

ANTIQUE BALUCH RUG, NE Persian tribal, Khorasan region, 19th century, and in very good original condition for the collector. The exact size, including kilim endings, is: 2′-9″ x 4′-8″ (69 x 142 cm). This lovely 19th century collector Baluch weaving was a special find for me. It possesses several Turkmen-related design motifs for field ornaments resting on an especially clear, soft red field. All the dyes are 100% natural and plant-derived. The brown and black dye lots are heavily oxidized (see close up photo). The rug is asymmetrically knotted open to the left on ivory wool warps and dark brown wool wefts. Alternate warps are slightly depressed giving the back of the weaving a grainy feel to it, yet it is soft and supple in the hand. The condition is quite excellent with scattered minor re-knotting in the field and, most noticeably, a small rewoven kilim corner area (see close up photo). All-in-all, the textile has survived the ravages of use and time in a rather good state of preservation for its age with both kilim end finishes intact and now sewn back secure to prevent future loss. The side cords are simply two bundles of the outermost warps wrapped with dark black goat or horse hair. The rug is clean, but a bit dusty. A hand cleaning will make the rug sparkle as the wool quality is quite soft and silky. This is a very rare type of antique Baluch for the collector. I have only found two other similar published specimens in the rug book literature. Refer to: (1) Jeff W. Boucher, “Baluch Woven Treasures”, 1989, plate 46, page 110-111, and (2) James Opie, “Tribal Rugs”, 1992, plate 13.18, page 239. Note that the Boucher piece has a near-identical field design and is attributed to the Qainat area. The Opie piece exhibits identical outer guard border surrounds. The main border on my offering displays alternating pin-wheel flower-heads and ram’s horn “kotchak” devices, both found on Turkmen weavings, especially from the Tekke tribal entity. All three pieces show the same red and blue color palette and they may have been made in the same weaving area. If you have any questions about this very special antique Baluch collector rug, email Michael Phillips at: phillipsrugs@comcast.net or feel free to call my studio at: (303) 885-7599. Please take a little extra time to view the other fine antique weavings of merit I have posted exclusively with eBay auction this week and remember to bookmark my eBay seller ID: IMOKUB2 (I am okay, you be too) to your “favorite sellers” list to see all of my weekly future offerings having this age, beauty, quality, condition, rarity, and collectible nature. NOTICE: ALL of my eBay listings come with an unconditional 100% money back refund guarantee (including ALL s/h/ins. fees) if for ANY reason the winning bidder is not happy with their purchase from me. Just a real nice weaving for any tribal, village, or nomadic rug collector specialist looking for a dynamic wall hanging. GOOD LUCK BIDDING!

Large Early 20th Century Commission of The Chelsea Carpet
4.62m x 3.43m. Wool. NO RESERVE!!

All gotusthelottus auctions have NO RESERVE!!

Item Details Large Early 1900’s Commission of The Chelsea Carpet that is in the V & A Museum in London. Were you to pick a carpet of your choice and have it made for you, you would be looking at a price tag in excess of £8,000. That is exactly what happened with this carpet in about 1930 and it has aged beautifully with no visible wear or damage, it has simply aged gracefully and looks fantastic. I have had it cleaned and if you are in the market for a large quality rug, this is without doubt one for the shortlist.

The main design of the Chelsea carpet contains two large x-shaped compositions made up of large and small medallions. They are balanced by the central device – two vases of flowers on elaborate stands, set on either side of a fish pond. Half of this central device is repeated at either end. The densely decorated field and border includes many animals, shown in repose or in combat.

One of several good lots for sale this week.  Check out my other items!
