Circa 1828 “The Gibson” Banjo Ukelele, In Playable ConditionDescription: This is a circa 1928 Gibson UB1 ukulele banjo, manufactured by Gibson Inc., Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, with the Gibson trademark “The Gibson” written in gold on the peghead. It has a banjo body but is tuned and played like a ukulele (“my dog has fleas”). This model was one of the earliest in a series of UB-style banjo ukes the Gibson Co. made in the early part of the 20th century. It has a 6″ calf skin head, 10 brackets, mechanical friction tuners with black buttons, mahogany stained maple body with a wooden flat plate resonator, maple neck, and a full-size 17-fret Brazilian rosewood fingerboard containing three pearl dot inlays at frets 5, 7, and 10. Nut is ebony. Gibson did not number their banjo uke models UB, UB-1, UB-2, or UB-3 and this one is no exception. The banjo uke is set up with a new set of GHS white nylon strings and ready to play.Condition: Good condition and playable. Finger board and frets are in excellent shape, the skin head is strong and tight, and the tuners all hold their tuning. Neck is sturdy and straight as the photos show. Everything but bridge and strings are original (tailpiece, brackets, tuners, resonator plate). Screws that hold the backplate are replacements and shorter than the originals which had spacers for control over sound loudness. (If a louder sound is desired, this can be had with longer screws that would increase the open space between the backplate and the rim. Sound is fine as is.) Metal is a little tarnished but not detracting. Wood has aged to a lovely soft reddish brown with a few minor scuffs here and there, but nothing noticeable (see all photos). This is a beautiful antique instrument in playing condition from America’s foremost instrument maker. Please ask all questions. Very low reserve. Shipping: USPS parcel post or priority mail to the lower 48; your choice at checkout. No shipping to Canada.
