1790’s LARGE COPPER US NAVY HULL SPIKE USS CONSTITUTION

1790's LARGE COPPER US NAVY HULL SPIKE USS CONSTITUTION

Buy Now

Current price:

$31

Very Rare and historically important, original 1790’s, U. S. Navy Relic believed to have been taken from the USS Constitution being a massive, Copper Spike made by Paul Revere. This wonderful, hand hammered, solid copper Hull Spike was purportedly taken from “Old Ironsides” during the 1927-1930 restoration. It measures nearly 11″ long and is very heavy. It is stamped on one side with the letters “US” as was the practice with the very earliest hardware used in the construction of American Navy Vessels. The “US” stamp attest to the fact that had passed inspection by U.S. Navy officials. The Revere foundry in Canton Massachusetts produced all of the copper nails, spikes, bolts and pins for the USS Constitution and for other early Navy frigates.

This Spike was originally purchased in 1988 at a well known Cape Cod auction (Richard A. Bourne Co., August 2, 1988, Lot 383) where they were sold with a family history stating that they had been taken from the USS Constitution during one of the restorations. It is quite obvious that this spike was removed and was not salvage, as nearly all salvage copper Spikes of this type are broken in pieces. In fact intact spikes of this period are exceptionally rare.

This wonderful, turn of the 19th century, Hand Forged Copper Hull Spike in excellent condition – intact, sound and bent at the tip as removed. The surface features a rich, warm age patina and we have done nothing to clean up or polish this outstanding relic. Overall this VERY attractive and very early, United States Navy Copper Hull Spike is very well preserved and displays beautifully. A very rare and wonderful piece of Early American Historical Memorabilia – a U. S. Navy Copper Hull Spike made by Paul Revere and believed to have been taken from the USS Constitution and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay “Detailed Seller Rating” Star System:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 “packing fee” – the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing – as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.
We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that “fishing for compliments” was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller’s “Star” rating. A monthly average of “4.6 Stars” (in any one of the four “Star” categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees – that’s $400 above what we would pay if we had a “4.8 Star” average in all 4 “Star” categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the “Star” rating system and remember that a “5 Star” rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay’s fee reduction program. ,

…… First off let me guarantee 100% plus shipping that the description below is accurate and that the two Eskimo Parkas in this auction are from the original Admiral Byrd Antarctica Exploration, which took place between 1928 and 1930. Both of these parkas come directly from the family estate of Marie A. Byrd, which was sold at Carl Stinson’s Auction in Massachusetts, many years ago. These parkers were originally displayed in a Washington DC Museum, until the auction. I am selling both of these Parkas together, including the original tags from the auction, and a tag from a cleaning company that the Byrd family used many years ago. In my photographs you can see some separations and tears to the pelts, but the very large majority of these two early 20thC Century Eskimo made parkas are still in very good condition. … I have thought long and hard about putting a reserve on these two important artifacts of American Exploration History, however I’m just going to let eBay tell me what they are worth. There is No Reserve on this auction! …… Please check out my other auctions you never know what you might find listed on our auctions and we list new auctions every day, most without any reserve.

1847-51 MANUSCRIPT WHALING SHIP LOGBOOK w/ WHALE STAMPS

12 March 2010
1847-51 MANUSCRIPT WHALING SHIP LOGBOOK w/ WHALE STAMPS

Buy Now

Current price:

$1526

Very rare and simply fantastic, original, 1847-51 Whaling Ship Manuscript Logbook from a trip aboard the New Bedford, Massachusetts Whaling Ship John Howland on a Sperm Whaling Voyage to the Southern Pacific Grounds off the coast South America. Included are approx 55 “whale stamp” illustrations – most made with a hand carved “stamp” and some being pencil drawn. This fantastic, original manuscript Journal appears to have been kept by the Captain of the John Howland – although he is not identified by name, in a number of entries the writer refers to himself in such a way that it is obvious that he is the Master of the Ship.

This fantastic manuscript Ship’s Log is bound in 1/4 leather with marble boards and measures approx. 8 1/4″ x 13 1/2″. It contains approx. 300 with approx approximately 200 of those pages completely filled with daily entries of the Voyage of The Ship John Howland, which left the seaport of New Bedford in the hunt for sperm whales on November 2, 1847 bound for the coast of Chile (The Southern Pacific Whaling Grounds), and not returning until July 20, 1851, when they …”made Long Island, Montauck Point”. The following is written on the front free endpaper of the Logbook: “Ship John Howland from New Bedford for the Pacific Ocean Sperm Whaling sailed November 2, 1847 with a crew of thirty one in all.”

The log contains details of day to day ship life, including longitudes & latitudes, winds, seas, sails set and used, chronometer readings, repairs made, number of men sick at any given time, sightings of black fish, porpoise, grampuses, killers, hump backs and fin backs, as well as ships sighted and ships spoken to.

The log is also profusely decorated with 4 different types of whale illustrations. The majority of these (37) were made with a carved “whale stamps” and are entered on days when sperm whales are caught, and vary in size from 1 1/4″ to 2 1/2″ in length, and are of a dark black ink with a white space in the center of the whale in which is written a number which appears to be the number of barrels of oil collected from (or expected to be collected) from each whale. There are also pencil drawings of four whales (also on days when a whale was caught), 2 half-stamps of whales, and 12 pencil drawings of whale-tails (which are entered on days on which whales are sighted but not caught).

This is NOT a travel Journal but a Log of the activities of a hard working Whaler hunting Sperm Whales ONLY in the Southern Pacific off the coast of Chili. While the entries always include the position of the Ship and the weather, much of what we read of the Log deals with the process of sighting, hunting, killing and extracting oil from the Sperm Whales that the John Howland and its crew were after. Daily entries early in the Voyage include Remarks of the Captain at the beginning of the voyage include these: Thursday 4th Nov, 1847: “…most of the green hands sick…”. Sunday 14th Nov, 1847: “…saw sperm whales…3 p.m. lowered , struck and killed…4 p.m. took the whale to the ship…7 p.m. commenced cutting…”. Monday 15th Nov, 1847: “…ready for boiling…5 a.m. commenced boiling…Jack Woahov very sick and no hopes of his recovery… Bennet and Temple both sick…”. Tuesday 16th Nov, 1847: “…Jack Woahov departed this life after being sick about ten days. He was complaining the next day after leaving New Bedford…”. Wednesday 17th Nov, 1847: “…committed the remains of Jack Woahov to the deep…boiling turned up 47 barrels of oil…”

As the Voyage continues the taking of Sperm Whales (or the lack thereof) dominates the daily entries. Some sample entries – both on days when whales are taken and when the captain is discouraged from the lack of whales – include: Saturday April 21st, 1849: “…saw sperm whales 5 miles to windward…employed working the ship up to the whales…9 a.m. lowered, struck and killed one. I got one boat stove…”. Saturday, October 13, 1849: “…saw a large whale heading to the ESE, lowered in chase…killed…4 p.m. took him alongside and commenced cutting…”. Saturday April 20th, 1850: “…lowered in chase, struck 2, 40 barrel whales, parted from one…and took one whale to the ship…”. Friday, May 5th, 1848: “…saw sperm whales to the NW, got within 2 1/2 miles of them and they turned windward and went like wild horses…”.

Some periods of time in this very long Voyage appear to have been especially discouraging: August 22nd, 1848: “…almost three months since we have seen the spout of a sperm whale…tedious times…”. Saturday, September 9th, 1848: “…caught a porpuss(sic)…in hopes soon to hear the cry of there she blows…how tedious and tiresome it is to go day after day, week after week and month after month as we have done for the past three months and not git a whale…it is wearing to the mind…”. Saturday, March 2nd, 1850: “…in chase 2 p.m. struck a large whale, capsized the boats, and the whale went off with a line and two irons…5 p.m. took up the boats…whale out of sight…our success is two stoven boats…”. Wednesday, May 22nd, 1851:
“…60 barrels the seven months past is all we have taken, plenty of ships about here, but no whales. It looks discouraging, still I am in hopes to make up two thousand barrels before I leave for home…”. Wednesday, September 18, 1850:
“…I wish I had gone a right whaling the past season, no doubt we should have filled and been ready for home at this present time…”

We did come across a number of entries involving discipline aboard Ship and troubles with the crew including the following: Saturday, March 18th, 1849: “…half the crew on liberty… Samuel Lake boat steerer having charge of the watch in the night took the bow boat, four men and deserted. Two men having deserted before makes seven renegades…”. Tuesday,June 5, 1849: “…put Frances Bennet in irons for refusing to do his duty and abusing myself and second officer…”. Tuesday, December 18th, 1849: “…all ready for sea…Charles Sould & Gardner deserted…”. Wednesday, December 19th, 1849: “…caught Charles Gardner…paid 10 dollar bounty…”. Tuesday, April 9th, 1850: “…gave David George 24 lashes for striking your humble servant and fighting…”.

We have not read every word of this log but constantly got “hooked” while skimming it, due to the amazing content and subject matter. The Journal is fresh to the market from an estate in Northeastern Massachusetts and is not only a wonderful read but also very attractive display with its many dark and bold whale stamp illustrations.

This fascinating and simply fantastic, mid 19th century manuscript Whaling Log is bound in its original 1/4 leather and marble boards which are tight, intact and quite attractive though worn. There is a red leather label on the spine with gilt lettering that reads “Journal of a Whaling Voyage”. The interior pages are in very good condition and appear to be complete with dates covering the entire Voyage, although several blank pages at the end of the volume have been removed. The pages are generally clean and crisp and the manuscript writing is quite legible throughout. The Whale Stamps and illustrations are dark and bold and very attractive.

This very rare and simply fantastic, original 1847-51 Hand Written, Logbook of a nearly 4 year Voyage on the New Bedford Whaling Ship “John Howland” to the Pacific Whale Fisheries is sold here, as always, without reserve and with the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it deserves!!!

Please note: This is an original, hand written Whale Ship’s Log – it is not a reprint, reproduction, printed book or later manuscript but the original Logbook that was carried and written on a Whaling Voyage in the years 1847 to 1851!!!

(Torishima), where the fishermen managed to survive for the next six
months. After much suffering, a chance visit to the area by the American
whaler John Howland (Captain William H. Whitfield), on the search for
sea turtles, discovered five underweight and badly distressed Japanese,
the youngest was fourteen years old. Captain Whitfield, with the
obligation to search for whales, kept the survivors on board for the
next five months at sea during which time the Japanese regained their
health and were taught the basics of whaling.
    Eventually the John
Howland reached the Sandwich Islands and put in at Honolulu. Some of the
waifs stayed at Honolulu under the care of Rev. Samuel C. Damon, the
Seaman’s Chaplain as well as publisher and editor of The Seaman’s Friend
(usually called just The Friend), a semi-monthly journal. Nakahama Manjiro, who
had been named ‘John Mung by Captain Whitfield, wanted to stay on the
ship. Captain Whitfield took him back to the United States and entrusted
him to James Akin, who enrolled Manjiro in the Oxford School in the town
of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The boy studied English and navigation for
a year, apprenticed to a cooper, and then, with Whitfield’s help, signed
on to the whaler Franklin (Captain Ira Davis). After whaling in the
South Seas, the Franklin put into Honolulu in October 1847, where
Manjiro again met his four friends. None were able to return to Japan,
for this was during Japan’s period of isolation when leaving the country
was an offense punishable by death.
When Captain Davis became mentally ill and was left in Manila, the crew
elected a new captain, and Manjiro was made First Mate. The Franklin
returned to New Bedford, Massachusetts in September 1849 and paid-off
its crew; Manjiro was self-sufficient; he had $350 in his pocket.
Manjiro promptly set out by sea for the California Gold Rush by ship.
Arriving in San Francisco in May 1850, he took a steamboat up the
Sacramento River, then a train into the mountains. In a few months, he
made about $600 and decided to find a way back to Japan.
In 1853, when Commodore Matthew Perry’s Black Ships arrived to force the opening of Japan, Manjiro became an interpreter and translator for the Shogunate and was instrumental in negotiating the Convention of Kanagawa. However, it appears that he did not contact the Americans directly at that time
In 1860, Nakahama Manjiro participated in the Japanese Embassy to the United States (1860). He was appointed translator on board Kanrin Maru, Japan’s first screw-driven steam warship, purchased from the Dutch. Due to Japan’s former policy of isolation, the crew had little experience on the open ocean, and during a storm, her Captain Katsu, Admiral Kimura and much of the crew fell ill. Manjiro was put in charge and brought the ship to port safely.
In 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, Manjiro studied military science in Europe. He returned to Japan by way of the United States. He was formally received at Washington D.C., and he took advantage of this opportunity by traveling overland to Fairhaven, Massachusetts to visit his “foster father”, Captain Whitfield. Eventually, Manjiro became a professor at the University of Tokyo.
Among his accomplishments, Manjiro was probably the first Japanese to ride a railroad, in a steamship, to officer an American vessel, and to command a trans-Pacific voyage. There is a great statue of Manjiro Nakahama at Cape Ashizuri, on Shikoku. In Fairhaven, the Manjiro Historic Friendship Society is renovating William Whitfield’s home to include a museum dealing with the Manjiro legacy
