1597 Magini Map - Universi Orbis Descriptio ad Usum Navigantium
Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617) was an Italian mathematician, cartographer and Professor of Astronomy in Bologna. He is best known for editing an edition of Claudius Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’ in 1596 and this map comes from that work, a 1597 edition engraved by Girolamo Porro. It is one of several maps from this work which we shall be auctioning. Included are the ‘Carta Marina’ (World Map) and the map of America. These scarce maps range from poor to good condition and this will be a chance for the collector to buy these desirable items for a reasonable price.

This attractive map of the World, ‘Universi Orbis Descriptio Ad Usum Navigantium’ is one of the ‘new’ (ie non-Ptolemaic) maps and shows Porro’s distinctive engraving which managed to incorporate enormous detail in a relatively small area. The map is generally known as the ‘Carta Marina’ since it used rhumb lines to help show one’s course. The map has unusual configurations to North and South America as well as a massive Antarctic continent. This is a highly sought-after map by collectors.
The map measures 5″ by 7″ , has wash hand colouring, and is in only poor to fair condition with fragile paper, some cracking and reinforcement at the rear
Nonetheless this is an opportunity to buy a highly desirable map at a much reduced price.
The map is guaranteed to be over 400 years old.

Ca 34 x 22 cms Text in German.
Fine woodcut WORLD MAP with exquisite hand colouring. Woodcut initialed VS for Virgil Solis.
This rare leaf come from the following rare folio German LUTHER Bible:Biblia Das ist die gantze Heylige Schrifft. Teutsch D. Mart. Luther. Sampt einem Register und schönen Figuren. The Wittenberg World Map, more commonly known in English as Daniel’s Dream Map, is probably the most mystical world map of all time. Here it is drawn by the famed woodcut artist Virgil Solis with his distinctive ornate border. At the time of its first publication as the sixty-first world map to go into print, it was, on the one hand, a depiction of the Old World, based on the Ptolemaic world view but including a number of recent Spanish and Portuguese discoveries, but on the other, a visualisation of the prophet Daniel’s apocalyptic dream of the four kingdoms. The continents are surrounded by a great sea on which, in some later variants, a ship is disappearing off the side horizon. The map is framed by four winds, with human heads blowing wind and clouds onto the earth. In the continents stand four fabulous beasts: a lion – in this first version, contrary to the biblical description, still without eagle’s wings; a bear; a leopard with four heads and four bird’s wings; and a goat with iron teeth, seven large horns and one small horn with a human head. In the west of Asia, but east of the Caucasus, a mounted army with people wearing turbans and carrying banners can be seen.In the depiction of the four animals and their geographical attribution, the artist largely follows the text of the seventh chapter of the book of the prophet Daniel in the Old Testament of the bible. The Turkish army, on the other hand, derives from the interpretation of the three authors. And it also indicates the reason for the creation of the map, namely, in a striking pictorial depiction, to convey to the Christian world, and especially the illiterate masses, the visionary message of the bible in the light of the threat to the Western world from an imminent Turkish invasion. Virgil Solis or Virgilius Solis (Nuremberg 1514 — 1 August 1562), a member of a prolific family of artists, was a German draughtsman and printmaker in engraving, etching and woodcut who worked in Nuremberg. His prints were sold separately or formed the illustrations of books; many prints signed by him are probably by assistants. After his death his widow married his assistant and continued the workshop into the early seventeenth century.A VERY ATTRACTIVE ITEM!!

OFFERED WITH NO RESERVE is a beautiful complete set of 5 maps drawn in 1762 by Jean Janvier and engraved and printed the same year by Lattre and Choffard, comprising a beautiful double-hemisphere map of the World and the traditional individual maps of the 4 Continents (i.e. North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe), each finely hand-coloured at about the time of publication, each with charming geographical idiosyncrasies reflecting the accepted, but erroneous, cartographical wisdom of the mid 18th century, each in excellent condition, and each boasting a fine and ornate engraved cartouche.

A BEAUTIFUL SET OF JEAN JANVIER’S MAPS OF THE WORLD AND THE FOUR TRADITIONAL CONTINENTS, DRAWN, ENGRAVED AND PRINTED IN 1762, AND EACH VERY ATTRACTIVELY HAND-COLOURED.

THE FIVE MAPS SHOW VERY CHARMING GEOGRAPICAL IDIOSYNCRASIES REFLECTING THE ACCEPTED, BUT ERRONEOUS, GEOGRAPHICAL WISDOM OF THE MID 18TH CENTURY.

Each map measures about 455 mm by 310 mm. Some of the important geographical inaccuracies include the following: an intact Northwest Passage connecting to a large inland sea in what is now British Columbia in Canada; the rather amorphous shape of ‘New Holland,’ or what is now Australia; the rather truncated shapes of South-East Asia; and the relative lack of detail concerning the interior of Africa (which was to continue until the late 19th century). It is also worth noting that the maps show the apex of 18th century Europe, with its colonies and empires intact, and before the age of revolutions that would begin only 14 years following the publication of these maps.

Again, the maps are in excellent condition, with wide margins, strong impressions clean paper, and vibrant colours.

The five maps are titled as follows:

“Mappe-Monde / ou / Description du Globe Terrestre, / Assujettie aux Observations Astronomiques / Par le Sr. Janvier Geographe / Avec Privilege du Roi / 1762. … / A Paris / Chez Lattre Graveur rue St. Jacques, au dessus de la Fontaine Saint Severin a La Ville de Bordeaux.”

“L’Afrique divisee en ses Principaux Etats / par le Sr. Janvier Geographe / A Paris / Chez Lattre Graveur rue St. Jacques au pres la Fonatine St. Severin, a la Ville de Bordeaux / Avec Privilege du Roy / 1762.”

“L’Asie divisee en ses Principaux Etats / par le Sr. Janvier, Geographe. / A Paris / Ches Lattre Graveur rue S. Jacques, au-pres la Fontaine Saint Severin a la Ville de Bordeaux. / Avec Priv. Du Roi.”

“L’Europe divisee en ses Principaux Etats / par le Sr. Janvier Geographe / A Paris / Chez Lattre Graveur rue St. Jacques pres la Fonatine St. Severin, a la Ville de Bordeaux. / Avec Privilege du Roy.”

“L’Amerique divisee par Grans Etats / Par le Sr. Janvier Geographe / A Paris / Chez Lattre Graveur rue St. Jacques, au coin de celle de la Parcheminerie, a la Ville de Bordeaux. / Avec Privilege du Roy. 1762.”

Jean or Robert Janvier (fl. 1746 – 1776) was a Paris based cartographer active in the mid to late 18th century. Janvier true first name is a matter of debate, as it appears as it often appears as either Jean or Robert. More commonly, Janvier simply signed his maps Signor Janvier. By the late 18th century Janvier seems to have been awarded the title of “Geographe Avec Privilege du Roi” and this designations appears on many of his latter maps. Janvier worked with many of the most prominent French, English and Italian map publishers of his day, including Faden, Lattre, Bonne, Santini, Zannoni, Delamarche, and Desnos.

In all, this is a beautiful complete set of 5 maps drawn in 1762 by Jean Janvier and engraved and printed the same year by Lattre and Choffard, comprising a beautiful double-hemisphere map of the World and the traditional individual maps of the 4 Continents (i.e. North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe), each finely hand-coloured at about the time of publication, each with charming geographical idiosyncrasies reflecting the accepted, but erroneous, cartographical wisdom of the mid 18th century, each in excellent condition, each boasting a fine and ornate engraved cartouche, and the set offered with no reserve.
Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volume. Please also take a moment to view my other auctions of rare and desirable English and Continental printed books dating from the 15th through the 19th century.
Please allow me to take the present opportunity to extend an official and public welcome to Peter Jones as a business partner; Peter handles, expertly and laudably, the photography, packaging and shipping of the books listed on eBay.
We are located in Ottawa Canada. As such, for international and U.S. customers we are able to ship out of a close Fed Ex and USPS outlet just across the border in the United States. We ship every Tuesday, weather permitting. For our Canadian customers we generally can ship using Canada Post or Fed Ex priority within 2 days after payment.
All books are tracked. No shipping is charged for books sold when the reserve is met. For books sold without reserve the shipping amount is charged as follows:
For customers outside North America we ship using USPS Priority International. This has proven to be a secure way to ensure delivery to most international locations within 10 days from the mailing date. Most books are shipped using Priority flat rate boxes. Oversized boxes for sets and large folios are calculated using online USPS tools. We charge the USPS rate plus $4.00 per box for no reserve auctions. Of course, it is also entirely possible to arrange shipment by FedEx Priority, immediately following payment , if such a service is desired.
For customers within the U.S. we ship Fed Ex ground. Prices are generally reasonable and usually the item arrives within 5 days from the shipping date. Again we can ship using a faster method, from Canada.
For customers in Canada we ship through Canada Post Expedited, every other day, which usually means 5 – 7 days for the book to arrive. As well we can ship faster, if desired.
What is a Giclee?
A Giclee, pronounced zee-clay, is a process utilizing the latest digital technology and sophisticated machinery and software to replicate original works of art. Not all giclees are printed on canvas but that is what we use exclusively. Because high quality is required, most museums today display giclees when the originals are not available.
Our works of art are brought to life on stretchable 100% cotton canvas as all fine art was meant to be. Our stretched and framed art arrives ready to hang and never need a mat or glaring glass to detract from their natural beauty.
Our high quality giclee reproductions are also sold at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia.
Payments are accepted through Paypal or you can call us toll-free with your credit card information. Payments are expected immediately or within 5 days.

Sample Refund Offer
If you are undecided about the piece of art that will provide the decorator’s touch you’re searching for, purchase a full scale 8″x10″ sample of any one of our canvas giclee reproductions.
The texture and visual quality will speak for itself and give you confidence in making your final selection.
Your cost will be refunded (deducted) from your future purchase of a 24″ x 20″ or larger canvas if you decide to order one of our standard or custom sizes.
Simply visit our ebay store and search for SAMPLE. Many, but not all, are automatically available through “buy it now”. If you do not see the selection you want call us toll-free or email.

Gerardus Mercator can certainly be called the best known cartographer
of the sixteenth century and pehaps in history. What he is be known for is
a technique of representing the oval shape earth on a flat surface, known
as “Mercator’s projection,” that was first used for a 1569 world
map.

This copy of Mercator’s Atlas is exceptional for its beautiful
hand-coloring. These are simply some of the most beautiful maps ever
made.

The original 1595 edition of Mercator’s Atlas is held in the Lessing
J. Rosenwald Collection in the Rare Book Division of the Library of Congress.
This CD includes the actual pages of this rare book from cover to cover in
all their original brilliance.

These are scans of the ORIGINAL maps from
the Atlas.

      on CD-ROM

      System requirements

      PC or Mac compatible.

Files are simple JPEG images with a basic HTML interface
(just like viewing a webpage)

Works with all versions of Windows including 3.1,
95, 98, 2000 or XP.

     Features of this CD-ROM

This auction is for a CD -ROM of the maps listed
in electronic form, NOT
can be printed at FULL SCALE or LARGER for framing and display. The results
are very high quality and convincing.
