Very rare 6” CA: 1880 J. Forest French World Globe

Forest, J. 19th& 20th century ParisJ. Forest made a variety of globes, largely for school use, but also for home use. Their vast variety included odd novelty globes, such as terrestrial globes on geared turntable stands and cigarette lighters incorporating globes. In the 20th century Forest produced light up globes with interesting machine age aluminum bases. Forest globes were mostly in French, with some for export in English or Spanish.
The age of the Globe has been determined by the political borders displayed, which are as follows:

Austro-Hungarian Empire (1868-1916), Russian Empire (includes Finland) 1745-1917, Ottoman Empire, Congo State (1885-1904), No Rhodesia (1895), No S/N. Dakota (1891), Saint Petersburg (before 1914), Alaska is already American (after 1867); Serbia and Bulgaria are independent (1878); Cyprus is not British yet (1878).

This fine looking Globe 12” tall, 6” diameter.
J. Forest Globes are very rare and very expensive, but a great quality. This model is one of the earliest of Forest manufactory. It is in good condition for its age. Colors are vivid, details crisp. There is scuffing and soiling. No loss of map. Wooden base is also in age appropriate condition with the minimal nicks.

International buyers welcome!

“Atlas sive Cosmographicae meditationes
de fabrica mvndi et fabricati figvra”

(Atlas, or Cosmographic Meditations on the Fabric of the World and
the Figure of the Fabric)

3 parts in 1 volume, 107 color maps, text in Latin

The first two parts of the “Atlas” were published in 1585 and 1589:
they covered France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and the Balkans. The
third and final part was left unfinished on Mercator’s death; his son completed
the work.

Gerardus Mercator can certainly be called the best known cartographer
of the sixteenth century and pehaps in history. What he is be known for is
a technique of representing the oval shape earth on a flat surface, known
as “Mercator’s projection,” that was first used for a 1569 world
map.

This copy of Mercator’s Atlas is exceptional for its beautiful
hand-coloring. These are simply some of the most beautiful maps ever
made.

The original 1595 edition of Mercator’s Atlas is held in the Lessing
J. Rosenwald Collection in the Rare Book Division of the Library of Congress.
This CD includes the actual pages of this rare book from cover to cover in
all their original brilliance.

These are scans of the ORIGINAL maps from

A c 1909 Imperial terrestrial
Globe

The map of this splendid aged piece of history speaks
of an era long gone. A classic imperialistic piece, as the map identifies
colonies of European Empires throughout the world. It does so by outlining each
colony with the same color the Colonist is shown. For example, Germany is
highlighted in red and therefore all its colonies are outlined in red as well. Note the labels applied atop and below, identifying
recent conquests to the North Pole and noting the South Pole to still be
undiscovered territory.

The elegantly baluster turned fruitwood base has a
functional compass embedded in its foot and provides this model with a
sophisticated, yet masculine appearance. Quite dominant in size, the globe is
perfect to be displayed in a Library like atmosphere.

Quite
interesting piece for globe collectors, history buffs and political junkies
alike.

This
globe endured World War 1, World War 2 and Trans-Atlantic shipping….and offers
scars to tell….

Perhaps
this makes the piece even more attractive as is though it would certainly be
worth a restoration project.

Regardless,
due to its condition we have not placed a reserve on this handsome artifact. Enjoy
making it part of your collection!

About
the manufacture:

Otto Herkt was a German Globe maker from c 1885 until
sometime post WW1. There is not much information available regarding this
manufacture. It is speculated to be sold to Grackauer Verlag during the 1920’s.

Description:

The Globe itself is covered with 12 individual paper
gores over plaster, with two polar calottes. Two additional labels are applied
to the Polar Regions, identifying the actual magnetic polar points.  The legend identifies underwater telegraph
lines and steamship travel, including the days of travel, nautical miles and
port cities. Countries and Empires and colonies are outlined in various colors.
Mountain ranges are ever so delicately identified. Railways and rivers are also
shown. Overall this is a very detailed map! The base is made of baluster turned
fruitwood with a rich walnut finish. Total height of this model is about 26
inches with a diameter of 15 inches.

This is a rather large Globe.

Condition:

The Globe is in fair condition. Rubbing, discoloration
and browning of the map is evident throughout. No loss of map though. A
hairline crack reaches half way around the equator (occurred during shipment to
the US). The finials on both ends of the axis have been replaced by generic
hardware. The base is in good condition but has a surface crack and needs to be
re-finished. Please see pictures for details.

The
age of the Globe has been determined by political borders and names of cities
displayed which are as follows:

Europe:

The Ottoman Empire (Turkish Empire) is still visible
with today’s Istanbul shown as Constantinople. St. Petersburg is shown instead
of what Petrograd became in 1914 (and Leningrad in 1924). What became the USSR is
still shown as the Russian Empire. Even more exiting is the fact that there is
no Hungary, Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia. All these countries were created in
1918 after the Austro-Hungarian Empire (which is visible on the Globe) was
dissolved. Poland is not visible and Finland has yet to gain independence
(1917).

Middle
East/Asia:

The Ottoman Empire is still visible, as there is no
Iran, Iraq, Greece, Turkey, Jordan or Syria.. China is displayed as an Empire.
The island of Sakhalin is divided between Japan and Russia (1905).

Africa:

German South West Africa and German East Africa are
still visible. Germany lost these colonies after World War 1. British Central
and East Africa is visible. Congo Staat has changed to the Belgian Congo
(1908).
