19th Century Stenciled Hand Painted Schoolgirl Theorem

19th Century Stenciled Hand Painted Schoolgirl Theorem

Buy Now

Current price:

$10

I just returned from the Portland Oregon antique show and found this amazing schoolgirl theorem. It came unframed and doesn’t have a date but I believe it’s from the mid 1800’s into the 1880’s. Further research needs to be done as far as the actual date. I’m no expert on this sort of folk art so don’t take the date as a for sure thing. I put it in the category of “samplers” as it seemed the best place for it, but of course it is not a sampler.
It was stenciled and hand painted on velvet and is in amazing condition. The very top of the picture has a few faint fade spots but they do not affect the actual painting.
Schoolgirl art: By the nineteenth century, many private schools and academies had been established throughout the Northeast for the education of girls and boys from “privileged” families. The girls were taught courses specifically to develop their “feminine” talents. One aspect of decorative painting taught extensively at the girls schools and also by individual instructors was “theorem” or painting with the use of stencils. The theorem painting is essentially a still-life picturing baskets or bowls of fruit or flowers. Done in oil on canvas, silk and especially velvet and watercolor and pastels on paper, the designs could be embellished with freehand details when the artist preferred.
The entire piece of velvet measures about 11 ¼” x 13 ¼” and the theorem itself measures about 7” x 10”. Please email me with any questions. On Mar-08-10 at 13:26:13 PST, seller added the following information:I got an email from someone who said they believed this was a 20th century piece. So please keep in mind that I do not know how old it is. The dealer at the show said late 1880’s and I also want to note that where it was in the frame has faded on the back edges so it’s for sure old enough for fading to happen. Again, I don’t know the age of this piece but it is truly a beautiful work of art.

Wonderful antique quilt made in the mid to late 1800’s in wonderful old blues & yellow.  The pattern name is called Odd Fellow’s Patch.

Made of 100% cotton, completely hand pieced, sewn & quilted measuring 84" x 70".  Each block measures 10 1/4" with large 6" x 4" triangles, 3" x 2" triangles & a 3" square.  The block has been completely quilted around as well as square 1 3/4" grid quilting throughout.  The yellow & red printed sashing is 3" wide & quilted with 1" diagonal lines.

The quilting must have been difficult as this is a thick quilt.  Spi is still tiny & even at 10 spi.

Such an array of blue fabrics, so many pretty patterns.  There is only one corner, which I have pictured for you, that shows fading; & it’s only gently faded.  The back of the quilt is a very nice old beige cotton looser weave muslin.

This is a super quilt in fantastic condition; one you’ll be proud to start a tradition with.

$153

This exuberant 1812 folk art sampler has it all!! It features a long haired Adam with his Eve in the Garden, beneath a bold Tree of Life entwined by the serpent…..but this imagery comes with additional whimsy, as the couple seems to have an entourage of miniature spotted dogs with them beneath the tree! Looking on from both sides there are playful, bright blue rabbits and spotted black dogs. This animated lower panel filled with folk imagery is separated by a dynamic horizontal band above, and in the upper half of the sampler a traditional and pious schoolgirl verse that begins with the lines:”Teach me betimes to tread Thy sacred ways,And to thy service consecrate my days….”. In addition to this inspirational verse, the top half is furthur highlighted by Quaker-style 8 pointed stars in each corner, and exceptional verticle handled urns. The sampler is large (19×20),and  conserved in an antiqure frame on acid free board ,with sensational contrast and resolution. It is signed:”Sarah Windsor her work Aged Thirteen in the Year of our Lord 1812″……The condition is very fine and vibrant and the colors ever more dramatic against the light, wheat colored linen. For those discerning collectors who seek out visual impact folk art samplers, this schoolgirl treasure will not disappoint. Even the oversized tulip flowers on either side of the Edenic scene are noteworthy and dramatic……just a fabulous overall presentation worth well into the 4 figure price range, but with only a 3 figure wholesale reserve. A comparable folk art Adam and Eve is pictured in Steve and Carol Huber’s book “How To Compare and Value Samplers”(pg 56)…..valued between $2,000 and $3,000……..A BUY IT NOW OFFER IS ALWAYS WELCOME BEFORE COMPETITIVE BIDDING

~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~
Lovely Vintage French ticking fabric dating c1940

I am selling this ticking by the ONE yard by 6.5 feet wide lengths~ ( should you require longer lengths, simply change the quantity button. EG should you require a 5 yard length simply change the quantity button to 5 and you will receive one long length measuring 5 yards long by 6.5 feet wide!! )

This is one of the most wonderful textile finds!!! This bold of Vintage unused ticking came from an old Hotel in Bordeaux ~ it was kept in a back storage room for many many many years! ~*~ When I found it, it was wrapped in rope so all of the inner ticking was protected from time! ~ I found it with the original tag still intact and the end piece had the factory stamp  ~*~ Stunning!! The photograph shows this ticking, folded in half by the width as it was too wide to photograph! ~*~~*~ The tone of this ticking is a brown shade of khaki with a white stripe, very classic French ticking! This ticking is an upholstery weight cotton, with a very durable herringbone weave. The hotel would have made their own mattress covers using this ticking, and this bolt is totally unused! It is SO wide too! ~*~ 78 inches (6.5 feet wide!!!) Truly an amazing find. The bolt was originally 90 yards long! ~ and I am selling it by the one yard lengths~!

Condition: This ticking is in amazing , unused condition! ~*~  A once in a lifetime find! ~*~

Here we have a delightful multi-coloured sampler, tacked to a wooden base, with what seems to be a lint type cloth. With varying forms of the alphabet and then the name, age and date with figures to the lower third, all bordered in what looks like a fruit vine, this is a lovely and quite intricate example.
The sampler is not framed, and does have the odd mark, but nothing that stands out greatly, and is still quite bright and vibrant considering its age.
Postage and packaging for United Kingdom customers is inclusive within the purchase cost of the item, Second Class Signed For, with basic insurance up to £39, while extra insurance(Royal Mail Special Delivery for up to £500) is at the request and cost of the buyer.
Overseas bidders will be charged at the package price minus the UK cost inclusive in the price, surface or air-mail, though insurance will again be at the request and cost of the buyer, and is usually £6.70 extra with insurance up to £500.

Current price:

$15

Hello and welcome to my auction!

Update:  As of 2/18/20, and the continued and unprecedented interest in this ribbon, there are now 67 of you, this is my final offering.  I have now lowered from 17.99 per 1/2 yard to 15.99 which still includes free shipping on whatever quantity you purchase.  No further discount available as I have now lowered by $4.00 total per yard.  That is fire sale pricing for this rare one of a kind ribbon that is still as SOFT and STRONG as the day it was created.  When it’s gone, it’s gone so Good Luck to those French Textophiles out there who know a to good to be true bargain when they see one!  As of March 19th, my sweet Mother’s birthday who is learning how to walk and talk again, this will be taken off the market to reappear perhaps as transformed French art peices in celebration of my love of all things Marie Antoinette.  (I only found out after my love affair with her in reading her diary, we share the same birthday.)  So, let the countdown to the games begin as there is One Month left on this item and it goes off market.  Thank you all again for your continued interest and Bonne Chance to any and all of you who have the opportunity to own this Divinely Fabulous ribbon.

Update:  As of 1/22/10, and the unprecedented interest in this ribbon.  There are 57 of you out there and you know who you are!, I am dropping the price on this again, for the final sale.  I am dropping to $17.99 per 1/2 yard (18 inches) and for each yard you buy in quantity starting with the 2nd yard, I will discount each yard by an additional $1, plus no matter what quantity, shipping is free whether you buy a little or you scoop some yards up for yourself.  I cannot go any lower on this as we all know about paying insertion fees, final value fees and then paypal fees on top as well.

You might also be interested in an additional auction I have for ribbon that is very similar only it they are rosebuds as opposed to flatter rosettes.  The colors of the ribbon in this auction are more pastel based, the rosebuds in the alternate auction are more bright and vivid.  Thank you again for your continued interest in this breathtakingly gorgeous ribbon.  It is truly divine.

I was fortunate enough to acquire all 40 yards of this GORGEOUS FRENCH SILK RIBBON ROSETTE TRIM just brimming with Ultra Shabby pastel colored Roses made in France from either the 1920’s or 1930’s!  OOH LA LA!

Update 10/31 – Happy Halloween!  In getting ready for the holidays, and in a celebratory response to the overwhelming number of the loyal and dedicated fence sitters who have been continuously monitoring this particular gorgeous beyond description ribbon (and you know you all are), I am substantially lowering the price on this “absolute perfection” of ribbons to bargain basement pricing.  Because you all are so many in number I have the visual of it being akin to the bargain basement table in a Macy’s Pre-Thanksgiving Day Sale where at some point I would probably have to call Security in to reign the mob in, for us all to Stop, to think and to once again – regain our control and self composure and be the human beings we all deep down know we all really are.  After all, we are dedicated, loyal, faithful Ebayers with our flawless feedback, are we not? We have distinguished ourselves from the masses and throngs of people fighting over the table remnants.  Thankfully this is a virtual sale and no one is going to get hurt in the process – not physically anyway.  So, I can officially now call this – The Bottom Basement “Fire” Sale – as in how low can you go.  In celebration and anticipation of the upcoming holiday season, I am extending my final offer to any and all of you who simply can’t wait on this ribbon anymore – @ the rock bottom price of $20 for a 1/2 yard inclusive of free shipping of course and I will go one step further that if you buy in quantity by the yard, for every yard you buy starting with the 1st yard, I will discount each yard further by an additional $2.00 off.  I hope this will make everyone happy now.  There is no need for the mob to fight over the table as there is coincidentally enough for each and every one of you to own the one yard you need for your projects with 2 yards to spare!  Thank you again for your continued interest in my auction and Happy Bidding on this gorgeous beyond description antique, vintage eye “candy” colored ribbon!! Bonne Chance!  (Free Shipping within United States Only.  International Bidders, please inquire prior to bidding.  Thank you very much for your understanding!)

Update 10/2 – Ok, I am reminded of Howie Mandel on Deal or No Deal.  In light of continued interest in this DIVINELY GORGEOUS ribbon, I have reduced the price to $24 per 1/2 yard with free shipping from $30 per 1/2 yard with shipping. With Ebay costs, paypal costs, etc., I think like the contestants say, “Yes, that’s my final offer”.  For every continuous yard purchased, I will make one futher concession and allow a reduction of an additional $2 per yard, bringing the cost to $46 per yard (as opposed to $48 and of course down from an original $60 per yard).   I hope this helps everyone in their decision making process.  Bonne Chance because you will ADORE THIS!

Update 10/1 – I have reduced this from 29.99 now to 26.99 for every half yard.  As an additional incentive, I will reduce to 49.99 per yard for a further savings of $4 for ea. yard purchased.

Update as of 9/27 – There are alot of lookers, but so far no takers.  In light of this, I have decided to offer a discount for every yard purchased.  Instead of 59.98 per yard, I will discount every yard purchased by $5 per yard.  Hopefully this will be the incentive that everyone is looking for.

Update as of 9/30 – As the number of lookers continues to increase, but again no takers as of yet, I have decided to offer Free Shipping to U.S. customers ONLY – no matter what the size of your order – perhaps this is additional incentive as well.

The colors are Amazingly GLORIOUS and accurate to photos!!

This is of course in excellent condition.  It is nearly impossible to find an entire bolt that is still as intact as the day it was made 70 or 80 years ago!    However….

In order to give Everyone who can appreciate this exceptional beauty an opportunity to own this Incredible RARE find, I am offering this heavenly ribbon in increments of One Half Yard (18″)auctions.  (Oh, before I forget the width is approximately ¼” wide.)

I will cut according to order.  So, if you choose to buy a yard, 1 1/2 yards, 2  or 3 - whatever your heart desires – it will be cut to the one continuous length of your needs.

International customers – please email for price quotes prior to bidding.  Thanks for your understanding!

Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have about this item.
Paypal accepted only.  Payment to be expected within 7 days.
Thanks so much for viewing my auction. If you have the time, please take a look at some of my other items that may be in keeping with your “tastes”.
