Antique Victorian Caramel Slag Glass Six Panel Lamp

Description:
Up for auction is a c.1900 Victorian caramel six panel slag glass lamp. It is a medum sized lamp measuring 22″ tall x 16″ diameter, the shade is 7″ tall.
All the bent glass panel around this lamp are original, the lamp is all original with original patina with a nice embossed design.
If you never owned a caramel slag glass lamp, you are in for a treat and going to love the light that emits from them. It is a very warm yellow lioght, very romantic and gives a beautiful serene ambiance to a room…I have five in my house and love them…they give off nicer light than the blue and green ones, I just love the warm light they produce…
 Condition:
The lamp has a couple condition issues…I found the frame of the shade was broken and repaired in a few places…you can see it in my close up photoes…I looks like a sort of clear epoxy fix…they are holding steadfast and should not be a problem…in the event it were to come apart I would concider having them soldered…They are there, and photoed for your viewing…there is also a couple small metal tabs that hold the shades in broken off…this is very common I see it on many lamps as they are just little pieces of bent sheet metal that is soldered on…there is more than one per shade to hold them in fine as it sits…The cord was replaced, its a little short at about 5′…the original patina shows normal wear and a little oxidization on the base…looks great as far as I am concerned all my lamps have this some even worse…It a nice lamp, its offered at no reseve, you set your price…I can guarantee safe shipment as I have shipped dozens of these lamps over the past year.
The bottom is unsigned with no numbers etc.
Offered at .99 with NO RESERVE!

VTG Orig Antique Suess Table Lamp Rare Arts & Crafts

VTG Orig Antique Suess Table Lamp Rare Arts & Crafts

Buy Now

Current price:

$66

This is a fine and rare vintage original Suess table lamp. Both the base and shade are known Suess designs but I have never seen them together. I have seen the shade on other Suess bases and I have seen a floor lamp version of the base with a different shade. This is guaranteed original top to bottom except the wiring which appears to have been redone in the last 50 years or so. Condition is as follows: the base hase a nice original patina, the sockets and acorn pulls appear original but need some adjustment repair – 1 droops a bit to much and one of the pulls does not work consistently, the shade has about 18 panels out of 200+ that have cracks – these do not detract very much because the pieces are so small. The shade is a tiny bit out of shape because of the weight and width hanging for almost 100 years. The lamp is about 25-1/2″ tall and the diameter of the shade at the bottom is also ~ 25-1/2″. A fine and rare Suess table lamp that is a well made as mant Tiffany lamps of the same period. Please allow for professional packing and shipping – maybe in 2 separate boxes $150 – $200 USD.

17th century brass sconce with original candle holder and drip tray!Probably Dutch.Circa 1670 – 1690Fine quality repouse brass.Dramatic, heavy gadrooned border – strong architectural form. The border contrasts with the delicate repouse and engraved sunbeams – the convex roundles are designed to create an interesting light effect from the candlelight. Punched and engraved decoration. There is a very fine decorative band of punched / engraved decoration below the sunburst.Almost identical examples are illustrated in Gentle and
Field “Domestic Metalwork 1640 – 1820″, page 202, fig 14. The
illustrated examples have apparently later (replaced) 18th century
candle sockets and trays and are dated by the author (perhaps for this
reason) to C.1720 – 30.  It is rare to find a sconce with the original candle holder and tray. They have normally been broken off and lost. The candle socket is of “tulip” form which supports the suggestion that the sconce has a Dutch origin and strongly suggests a date of circa 1670. The “tulip” candle sockets on “Heemskirk” candlesticks are ascribed to this period. There is no drip tray around the perimeter of the socket – at this date the molten tallow would flow down the sides of the socket and be collected in a necessarily wide pan (as here). The socket has its original ejector hole, which is on the right hand side of the socket (unfortunately I forgot to photograph this!)There are traces of interesting early writing in ink on the reverse. Dimensions:Width: 6 1/2 inches, 17 cms (approx)Height: 13 1/4 inches, 33.5 cms For further details of early sconces see:   Peter Thornton “Seventeenth Century Interior Decoration in England, France and Holland” Condition:Wear and dents consistent with age.Good colour early brass.

Not over polished. Good patination. The photographs provide the best indicator of condition, but your attention is drawn to the following:3 splits to the border which have old repairs to the reverse. They do not detract in my opinion. The tray is secured to the backplate with the original 5 rivets. The tray is firmly secured to the backplate. At some point the pan has probably become wobbly and someone has felt it necessary to provide additional support to the tray from underneath using solder. Solder has also been applied to the top of the pan – near to the juction with the backplate. The soldering is clumsy and possibly unnecessary. There are a couple of cracks/tears in the bottom of the pan. It is rare to find a sconce with the original candle holder and drip pan. In my opinion the condition is more than compensated for by the rarety of finding a 17th century sconce with all of the original elements.  I will ship
abroad.

I will
combine shipping where possible. I pass on any postal cost savings to the
buyer.

Cost is
calculated according to packed weight + £5 packing per parcel. I use Royal Mail
or Parcelforce tracking service unless the buyer specifies otherwise. I regret
that I am unable to give precise shipping quotes in advance due to the
fact that I do not know the packed weight and I am unable to deal with the
volume of requests for different destinations.

Royal Mail or Parcelforce website for further details

On 09-Mar-10 at 11:01:18 AEDST, seller added the following information:please note on the side of the base where there is a small loss of paint there is a 1cm crack/line which i think is a firing flaw when made, none of this is visvble when the lamp faces you, I consider this very minor on the lamp (sorry i did not see this when it was first listed)
