Nicolaus
de Ausmo
revised and augmented the 14th-century Summa of Bartholomaeus
de Sancto Concordio, Pisanus, in 1444. A digest
of canon law, arranged alphabetically, this popular handbook was printed in more
than twenty editions during the 15th century.
More or less evident dampstain throughout the
book. Rubricated throughout in red and blue. Printed on strong and crisp
Incunabula paper.
Bibliographic reference: Hain 2166. Without
title page or pagination; printed in double columns, 42 lines to the full column.
Pages: this Incunable should have 500 leaves. Our
copy is missing three text leaves: the first two leaves and the last one with
the colophon and the first original blank. Collated with the copy in the British
Library.

1310 Illuminated Manuscript Vellum Book of Hours Leaf

THE VOLUME IS BEAUTIFULLY BOUND IN EARLY 17TH CENTURY MOTTLED CALF, WITH RICH AND ORNATE GILT DECORATION UPON THE SPINE AND THE BOARDS, AS WELL AS THE ARMS OF A 17TH CENTURY FRENCH BISHOP UPON THE BOARDS.

PROVENANCE: 17th century French bishop (arms in gilt upon the boards).

The full title reads as follows:

“Ioan. Petri maffeii, Bergomatis, e Societate Iesu, Historiarum Indicarum Libri XDVI. / Omnia ab Auctore recognita & emendate. / In singular copiosus Index. / Cadomi, / Ex typographia Iacobi Mangeant. / M. DC. XIIII [1614].”

Giovanni Pietro Maffei (1536-1603), a skilled Latinist and Humanist who had entered the Jesuit Society in 1565, compiled this history of the Indies over a period of twelve years, between roughly 1575 and 1587, spending this time in Lisbon assembling his material. It is widely considered a classic on the subjects it addresses.

In 1603, the Jesuit Visitor (Valignano) wrote from Macao: “Of all those who have so far written about Japan, none has done it with greater precision or in better order than father G.P. Maffei.” Besides providing a systematic history of the missions, Maffei’s work laid to rest many of the accusations that were then being made about the falsities and exaggerations being spread by the letterbooks.

Lach states:

“Maffei’s work is written with probity as well as elegance, for the Jesuit humanist was writing at a time when the ‘Indian Letters’ were being attacked for their falsities and exaggerations by leading figures in the Society both in Europe and Asia. It was prepared in the midst of a flurry of Jesuit activity which revolved about the related efforts of the young Society to prepare a history of its activities and to prepare biographies of its great founders: Loyola and Xavier.”

Barba de Moraes commends the accuracy of Maffei’s writings concerning Brazil, including the description of its geography and of the Azvedo and the Brazilian martyrs.

The volume is complete in all respects and is paginated lxxx, 718. The volume measures about 17.2 cm by 10.7 cm by cm; each leaf measures about 165 mm by 100 mm.

The volume is bound in richly gilt early 17th century French mottled calf, with an early 17th century French bishop’s arms upon the boards, and with ornate tooled gilt compartments and floral cornerpieces upon the boards and the spine. The binding is solidly in very good condition, with strong hinges and a strong book-block. The outer edge of the boards shows wear and minor loss; otherwise, the volume shows only minor wear at the edges and corners, as well as minor scuffing of the boards (not materially affecting the gilt).

Internally, the volume is also in very good condition, with generally clean pages, clear print and generally sufficient margins throughout. The upper margin is trimmed a little closely, touching a few headlines. The preliminary leaves show a mild dampstain, and the remaining leaves show light, scattered an unobtrusive foxing. Generally, this is an appealing example internally.

In all, this is a truly beautiful example in a very fine binding of Giovanni Pietro Maffei’s “Historiarum Indicarum Libri XVI,” printed at Caen (Cadomi) in octavo by Jacob Mangeant in 1614 and stunningly bound in early 17th century French mottled calf with exceptionally rich and ornate gilt decoration, with a French Bishop’s arms upon the front and rear boards, this edition newly augmented and corrected by the author, supplied with a copius index, complete in all respects, and offered with no reserve.

For customers outside North America we ship using USPS Priority International. This has proven to be a secure way to ensure delivery to most international locations within 10 days from the mailing date. Most books are shipped using Priority flat rate boxes. Oversized boxes for sets and large folios are calculated using online USPS tools. We charge the USPS rate plus $4.00 per box for no reserve auctions. Of course, it is also entirely possible to arrange shipment by FedEx Priority, immediately following payment , if such a service is desired.
For customers within the U.S. we ship Fed Ex ground. Prices are generally reasonable and usually the item arrives within 5 days from the shipping date. Again we can ship using a faster method, from Canada.
For customers in Canada we ship through Canada Post Expedited, every other day, which usually means 5 – 7 days for the book to arrive. As well we can ship faster, if desired.

Some defects in just four leaves, but a very good copy printed on crisp and

Gothic letter, double-column, 31 lines, printed throughout in red and black,
red woodcut initials, 18 leaves of woodcut music on 4 staves.

Johannes Stumpf studierte an der Universität Heidelberg Theologie. 1520 arbeitete er in der bischöflichen Kanzlei in Speyer. In Freiburg im Breisgau wurde er in den Johanniterorden aufgenommen. Später erhielt er die Priesterweihe in Basel. 1522 wurde er Prior im Ritterhaus Bubikon imZürcher Oberland und erhielt das Pfarramt der dortigen Kirchgemeinde.

He was sent in 1521 to the preceptory of that order at Freiburg in Breisgau, ordained a priest at Basel, and in 1522 was placed in charge of the preceptory at Bubikon (north of Rapperswil, in the canton of Zürich). PICCOLOMINI, AENEAS, SYLVIUS (PIUS, II, PAPA). Epistolae in Pontificatu editae, Opus impressum…Mediolani. Per Magistrum Antonium de Zarotis Parmensem, 1473, Maii, 25 ( Milan, May, 25, 1473). Large 4° ( 257 x 189), ( 183 leaves , of 184, lacking the last leaf of Tabula, blank, unnumbered and unsigned [but, a–f10 g4 h–p10 q12 r10 s14 *4] , later hard vellum binding, 32 lines to a page, roman type, profusely rubricated with 54 finely handpainted red initial letters, some of them with long floreal extension in sepia ink along the internal side of the page, some contemporary marginal handnotes scattered traces of use and few waterstains, but a genuine, wide margined copy on strong and crisp paper. Defects: the book is textually complete , but the three final leaves of index ( “Tabula”) – lacking in several of the copies recorded in public libraries- are here present in a nice facsimile i.e. reprinted on ancient paper.

His Epistles, which were collected by himself, are an highly important source of historical informations. They contain a vaste collection of letters to the most renowned personages of his age – from Mahomet to St. Catherina of Siena, from Frederic the Emperor to the King of France, from the Queen Isabel of Castilla to the King of Portugal – covering the entire landscape of the historical, political and war relationships in Europe’s late middle age.
