L O N D O N : Printed for BENJ. MOTTE, at the Middle Temple Gate in Fleet-ftreet. MDCCVII [1727]
Published the after the first edition of 1726, this is stated the second edition on the title page, but is the fourth octavo.
Contemporary full panelled calf, neatly rebacked, worming to lower blank margins and some worm tracks affecting text, these neatly repaired (please see pictures), plates slightly browned and some light offsetting, otherwise good clean condition. Octavo Pagination pp. [28], v-xii, 148, [6], 164, [8], 155, [9], 199, [1, blank], [28, publisher's list], complete with the engraved portrait frontispiece, 5 engraved maps and 1 diagram.

Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. He was a prolific and versatile writer. and , though his reputation has suffererd many fluctuations, the originality of his imagination has never been in question.
Swift’s most famous work, Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, better known simply as ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ was first published in 1726, and has never been out of print since. The work is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the “travellers’ tales” literary sub-genre. “From the earliest days of its popularity, ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ has fooled readers into agreeing with attitudes it satirizes: one contemporary reader declared he didn’t believe a word of it. It is a seriously reductive work, a satire on pride and folly; Gulliver himself is a human ambassador , gullible, snobbish and servile, and his opinions are often ridiculous, yet common. The book is also lastingly funny, the hero’s antics arising entertainingly from bizarre proportions of his various surroundings: there is an element of the fantastic as well as the satirical”. (Cambridge Guide to english Literature). One of the great classics of English literature.

LONDINI,Impenfis GEORGII BISHOP & IOANIIS NORTON. M.DC.X.[1610]
~ THE FIRST EDITION ~First published in Latin, this is the first English edition.
Contemporary full calf, gilt arabesque to both boards, rebacked, lacks upper brass clasp, a few marks to text but generally very good clean crisp condition. A folio volume, it measures approximately Pagination pp. [16], 208, 207-287 [i.e. 299], 302-822, [2], 233, [55], text collated and complete but lacking the maps.
Provenance: Edward Gwynn, gilt stamp to upper cover. Edward Gwynn (d. c. 1645) was admited to the Middle Temple in 1610, and made Barrister in 1631. The books in his library bore his name, sometimes with his initials to the lower cover, with some found at the Middle Temple Library, St. John’s College, Cambridge, and Marsh’s Library, Dublin.
WILLIAM CAMDEN (1551-1623), “The British Pausanius”, was a native of London. He attended Christ’s Hospital, St Paul’s School and Oxford University. From 1575 he taught at Westminster School but spent holidays travelling for antiquarian research. The first edition of his celebrated Britannia was published in Latin in 1586. He became headmaster of Westminster in 1593 and Clarenceux King of Arms, a senior officer of the College of Arms, in 1597. It was first translated into English by Philemon Holland and published 1610 in folio. It was based on Camden’s final edition of 1607 and probably translated under Camden’s direction. It was the first ever published topographical survey of the whole British Isles, county by county. A momental work, it enjoyed scholarly and popular praise, according to Nicholson for example, it was “an honour to its author, and the glory of his country… the value of the Britannia can hardly be over-rated: the glory of this queen’s reign, as well as her successor’s, and the prince of our English antiquaries, was Mr. Camden… his Britannia… may be stiled the common sun, our modern writers have all lighted their torches.”

Giovanni Pietro Maffei (1536-1603), a skilled Latinist and Humanist who had entered the Jesuit Society in 1565, compiled this history of the Indies over a period of twelve years, between roughly 1575 and 1587, spending this time in Lisbon assembling his material. It is widely considered a classic on the subjects it addresses.

In 1603, the Jesuit Visitor (Valignano) wrote from Macao: “Of all those who have so far written about Japan, none has done it with greater precision or in better order than father G.P. Maffei.” Besides providing a systematic history of the missions, Maffei’s work laid to rest many of the accusations that were then being made about the falsities and exaggerations being spread by the letterbooks.

Lach states:

“Maffei’s work is written with probity as well as elegance, for the Jesuit humanist was writing at a time when the ‘Indian Letters’ were being attacked for their falsities and exaggerations by leading figures in the Society both in Europe and Asia. It was prepared in the midst of a flurry of Jesuit activity which revolved about the related efforts of the young Society to prepare a history of its activities and to prepare biographies of its great founders: Loyola and Xavier.”

Barba de Moraes commends the accuracy of Maffei’s writings concerning Brazil, including the description of its geography and of the Azvedo and the Brazilian martyrs.

The volume is complete in all respects and is paginated lxxx, 718. The volume measures about 17.2 cm by 10.7 cm by cm; each leaf measures about 165 mm by 100 mm.

The volume is bound in richly gilt early 17th century French mottled calf, with an early 17th century French bishop’s arms upon the boards, and with ornate tooled gilt compartments and floral cornerpieces upon the boards and the spine. The binding is solidly in very good condition, with strong hinges and a strong book-block. The outer edge of the boards shows wear and minor loss; otherwise, the volume shows only minor wear at the edges and corners, as well as minor scuffing of the boards (not materially affecting the gilt).

Internally, the volume is also in very good condition, with generally clean pages, clear print and generally sufficient margins throughout. The upper margin is trimmed a little closely, touching a few headlines. The preliminary leaves show a mild dampstain, and the remaining leaves show light, scattered an unobtrusive foxing. Generally, this is an appealing example internally.

In all, this is a truly beautiful example in a very fine binding of Giovanni Pietro Maffei’s “Historiarum Indicarum Libri XVI,” printed at Caen (Cadomi) in octavo by Jacob Mangeant in 1614 and stunningly bound in early 17th century French mottled calf with exceptionally rich and ornate gilt decoration, with a French Bishop’s arms upon the front and rear boards, this edition newly augmented and corrected by the author, supplied with a copius index, complete in all respects, and offered with no reserve.

Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volume. Please also take a moment to view my other auctions of rare and desirable English and Continental printed books dating from the 15th through the 19th century.
Please allow me to take the present opportunity to extend an official and public welcome to Peter Jones as a business partner; Peter handles, expertly and laudably, the photography, packaging and shipping of the books listed on eBay.
