MASTERPIECE Ancient Greek Canosan pottery VOLUTE KRATER brought to you by ArtAncient Antiquities for Sale
One of the largest, most beautiful, genuine ancient Greek Canosan ceramics ever offered for sale on eBay.
This is an Ancient Greek Hellenistic period, Canosan Volute Krater, dating to approximately 250 B.C.
The magnificent Volute Krater is of typical form, with cylindrical, splayed base, acorn shaped body and wide flaring mouth. Two loop handles lie balaterally and are surmounted by the circular volutes that give this ceramic shape its name. The volutes themselves are decorated with beautiful molded and painted female faces.
The piece is painted throughout in typical Canosan, unglazed style. In contrast to most Canosan wares, much of the original pigment remains on this example. A winged Nike, two ladies of fashion, rosettes, tendrils and palmettes can still be seen in wonderful vibrancy, despite the extreme age and delicacy of the paintwork.
An incredible piece.
For comparison, please see Christies London, Antiquities, 13th October 08, lot 14, where two much smaller and markedly inferior Volute Kraters sold for approximately $6,000 each. This item is being listed as a No Reserve auction, to promote ArtAncient Ltd’s new eBay presence. Please see our eBay shop for more quality ancient art.
